Writing is not only personally gratifying; it?s also therapeutic. Ask anyone who writes on a regular basis, and they?ll likely tell you they feel better when they write.
In my workshops, I?ve heard comments from those who have the desire to write, even the ache to communicate through writing, but are unsure of what to say.
If you have the desire, a decent command of language (which you can develop), and a little self discipline, you can write. If you?re writing for business or public consumption, you may want to hire a ghost writer. At the very least, you?ll want a competent editor on your team. We don?t always catch our own mistakes ? and that includes all of us.
As for subject matter, write what you know. Hobbies, skills, topics of interest; all have value and will hold the interest of readers when communicated well. In some cases, your piece may require a little research or a few facts to back up your claims. Great! Go after what you need. The Internet is your playground. Just remember never to plagiarize.
If you?re just beginning, write for your own pleasure. Learn to speak to others by first developing a relationship with yourself.
How?
Journal. It?s fun, and as I mentioned earlier, therapeutic.? We?ll discuss this aspect of writing next time. Until then, dust off your keyboard or sharpen that pencil and get started.
