Effective Debt Management, Getting Rid Of Your Debt

Debt management is an effective means of dealing with your debt to reduce the amount that you have a quickly as possible, in order to avoid all those exorbitant interest charges and related finance costs that are associated with debt. The first thing that needs to be realised is the true cost of debt, which is pretty easy to calculate, and once you come to what you are actually paying back together with the interest will enable you to realize the true need for a debt management plan.

The first step in your planning is to organize your accounts into both short and long term loans or debt instruments, following which you will need to establish which has the highest interest rate. Once you have determined these basic arrangements, you should then calculate if you can pay anything extra into your highest interest loan, this will probably be your credit card, and will definitely be your pay day loan if you have one. Take your normal repayment amount and add the additional payment to that account, you will then be able to pay this off sooner; this should be carried on paying all other debts too. Once the first account is settled then take that entire repayment, together with the additional payment defined and apply this to the next loan or debt item, in addition to the existing payment. This form of debt management works, and you will notice how efficient this is once you reach your second debt or loan on your list, as the entire payment from your previous payment will now go towards this one.

If you keep rolling over all the repayments onto the next loan, you will see the results as well as how effective this is in terms of a debt management plan, based purely on the amount of interest that you have avoided in the specific debt. This can easily be calculated by taking the original repayment and interest rate and calculating the total amount repaid. Then calculate the new amount repaid, with the increased repayment and you will see the differences in total amounts repaid in your new debt management plan. This process will also not happen overnight but rather requires that commitment and dedication to getting out of debt, the feeling of which is nothing short of freedom, without having to worry about repayments and ridiculous interest rates.

Debt management is your ticket to less stress about financial issues, as well as providing a way forward to establish a great savings account that you can use instead of being reliant upon banks, credit cards and financial institutions. It also goes a long way in providing for your retirement, without you having to worry about being dependent upon others.

Debt Management is not only a valid solution, but rather vital to your debt situation and getting out of debt sooner. Visit Shed Debt for more information.

Turkey sends military convoys toward Syrian border

Umit Bektas / Reuters

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan sits in the cockpit of a Hurkus aircraft, Turkey's first locally-produced military training plane, during a ceremony in Ankara on Wednesday.

By msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton, NBC News' Aziz Akyavas and news services

Updated at 09:55 ET: Hamas said on Thursday that one of its members, Kamal Husni Ghanaja, had been killed in his home in Damascus and that it was trying to find who was behind what the Palestinian Islamist group described as a "cowardly murder."

Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, said in a statement that it was trying "to identify the party behind the deplorable crime," but did not immediately accuse Israel, its long-time enemy, of involvement in the killing.?

ISKENDERUN, Turkey -- Turkish troops and military vehicles deployed toward the border with Syria on Thursday as a precaution after Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan gave orders to react to any Syrian threat approaching the frontier.

Erdogan, who has given shelter in the border area to rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad, announced the new rules of engagement for Turkish troops on the border after Syrian air defenses shot down a Turkish warplane last Friday.

"I can confirm there are troops being deployed along the border in Hatay province. Turkey is taking precautions after its jet was shot down," a Turkish official said on condition of anonymity.

He said he did not know how many troops or vehicles were being moved but said they were being stationed in the Yayladagi, Altinozu and Reyhanli border areas of Turkey's southern Hatay province. He said anti-aircraft guns were also being stationed along the border.

Turkey to help 'liberate the Syrians from dictatorship'

A military convoy of vehicles including anti-aircraft missile launchers from the 5th Mechanized Armored Brigade left a base in the southeastern city of Gaziantep on Thursday and travelled to neighboring Kilis province on the border, video from the Turkish Dogan news agency showed.

A strong explosion rocked the Syrian capital near a busy market and the Palace of Justice. Msnbc.com's Richard Lui reports.

Roads were closed to traffic as the convoy, escorted by police cars, passed by.

Seven die in attack on pro-regime TV station

Another convoy of about 30 military vehicles, including trucks loaded with missile batteries, left Turkey's coastal town of Iskenderun on Wednesday and deployed near the Syrian border 30 miles away, Turkish news agencies said.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told his newly appointed cabinet that a real "state of war" exists in the country and directed them to direct all its efforts toward vanquishing the uprising against him. ITV's Bill Neely reports.

Turkish television film showed the column moving on Wednesday, escorted by police cars, along a narrow highway leading out of the town, the main port of Turkey's Hatay province. It included rocket launchers on transporters, anti-aircraft artillery and military ambulances.

A Reuters journalist saw another large truck carrying an anti-aircraft gun leave Iskenderun on Thursday for the border area, escorted by two army trucks, one carrying 10 troops.

'No more tolerance'
Erdogan said any military element moving towards the Turkish border and deemed threatening would be declared a military target. The preponderance of air defense weapons in the convoy suggested Turkey was preparing for any possible approach by Syrian helicopters or warplanes.

NYT: Turkish border a crucial link in Syrian conflict

While the military movements were ratcheting up the pressure on Syria, Turkey was likely being very careful, NBC News producer?Aziz Akyavas in Turkey said.

"Syria has been chasing Syrians fleeing the country and hitting Turkish soldiers and posts," he said on the telephone on the border with Syria. "Turkey is saying, from now on no more tolerance."

The Turkish border region is sheltering more than 33,000 Syrian refugees as well as elements of the rebel Free Syrian Army.

But "the Turks are being very careful, using diplomatic language very carefully -- a war would be a real disaster," he added.?

State-run Anatolia news agency said armored military vehicles were being transported to military installations in Sanliurfa, in the middle of Turkey's border with Syria, and Hatay, a panhandle province that juts down into Syria.

Report: Syrian general, dozens of other soldiers defect to Turkey

It said several military vehicles had travelled separately to a military garrison in the border town of Reyhanli in Hatay.

Specific details have not been made public of the new rules of engagement issued to troops after the shooting down of the warplane, which Turkey says was in international air space but Syria says entered its territory at high speed.

Syria's pro-government television station has been attacked. Seven people were killed. It is one of the boldest attacks yet on a symbol of that regime as rebel forces step up the fighting around the capital Damascus. ITV's Bill Neely reports.

Aram Nerguizian, a Syria expert at Washington, D.C.,-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, told msnbc.com that?Assad "has a very small window" ?to say that the downing of the the Turkish fighter was a mistake.

"Syria is sitting and not providing a high-level response to this (and) the last thing these players should be doing is not talking to each other," he said. "These are two of the region?s largest militaries and it would be disastrous if things deteriorated in ways neither side expected."

Nerguizian added that "neither side wants to show weakness."

Blast near busy market
Meanwhile, a?strong explosion rocked the Syrian capital Thursday near a busy market and the Palace of Justice, sending black smoke billowing into the sky. State TV reported at least three people were wounded and around 20 cars were damaged.?

An Associated Press reporter at the scene said some cars were charred and many had their windshields blown out.

A fireman tries to extinguish fires at the scene of two huge bomb explosions outside the Palace of Justice in Central Damascus on Thursday.

Syria's state-run TV said the explosion was in the parking lot of the Palace of Justice, a compound that houses several courts. The blast happened at 1 p.m. near the capital's famous Hamidiyeh Market, an area crowded with families stocking up on food and other supplies for the weekend, which begins on Friday in Syria.

Witnesses reported hearing one blast, but state-run TV said two explosions struck the area. The report also said a roadside bomb was found but did not explode.

Msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton, NBC News' Aziz Akyavas, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Nora Ephron, the writer of iconic romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally ... " and "Sleepless in Seattle" among other hit films, is reportedly "gravely ill" and "not expected to make it through the night."

TMZ reports that family members are currently telling close friends of the writer/director "there is little hope that [Ephron] will recover from her current condition." The nature of her illness is not currently known, though it's been reported that Ephron is suffering from leukemia.

Word of Ephron's condition first hit the Internet on Tuesday (June 26) by way of an article published by journalist Liz Smith, a close friend of the legendary Hollywood screenwriter. In the column, Smith writes about Ephron as though she has already passed away, praising her friend's "grave" and "unexpected" humor.

"She never gave the answer I expected to anything. She was grave in her humor, which made it deadly, unexpected, truly funny and dauntingly intelligent," wrote Smith. "She seemed never to want or expect anything, while always demanding the best from the rest of us. She was — always — right and somehow left the smartest, most ambitious and silliest of us in the dust at her feet."

Shortly after publication of Smith's column, Ephron's former close friend Margo Howard wrote on : "A very accomplished writer died. Nora Ephron, from cancer."

Ephron's publisher Knopf later told The New York Times that Ephron is "still alive," according to a tweet from Times writer Julie Bosman. Knopf rep Elizabeth Lindsay said as much in a statement to the Atlantic Wire: "It's pretty critical. She's not doing well, but she's certainly alive ... The report she has passed away is not correct."

Stay tuned to MTV News for further updates on Ephron's condition.

Don't let a summer trip to the beach go to waste. While your family is having fun in the sun, be sure to snap photos of their adventures in the sand and surf. Pictures of your kids chasing seagulls, collecting seashells, swimming, surfing, sunbathing, flying a kite or reading under a colorful beach umbrella are the heart and soul of a beach vacation-themed scrapbook.

In addition to snapping images of your trip, consider jotting down some of the funniest or most poignant memories to feature in journaling blocks. If you don't have the time or energy to write down anecdotes or notes while you are at the beach, but you still want to spice up your scrapbook layouts when you get home, consider surfing the Internet for appropriate quotes. For example, sites such as Scrapbook.com features a slew of famous phrases that can be used to add a special touch to a beach vacation memory album.

Some popular quotes include:

"Our memories of the ocean will linger on, long after our footprints in the sand are gone."

"To find a seashell is to discover a world of imagination."

"I have always loved the beach. The smell of the salty water, the wind in my face, and the gentle roar of the waves all combine to create a sense of peace and calm."

"If you want to know how much I love you, count the waves."

"Don't grow up too quickly, lest you forget how much you love the beach."

"In every grain of sand there is a story of the earth."

Don't forget to collect a few mementos of the beach while you are on vacation. You can use items, such as sand, shells and seaweed to embellish your layouts. My neighbor recently created a stunning sandcastle layout featuring items she collected during a family trip to the lake. She selected a large piece of tan colored cardstock and cut it in shape of a sandcastle. Next, she used a craft knife to slice out windows in the castle. Then, she sprayed the cardstock with a photo-safe adhesive, and sprinkled it with a bunch of sand. When the adhesive dried she placed photos of her kids in the windows of the sand castle and added it to the layout. Finally, she added very small shells and tiny pieces of beach glass around the sandcastle cut-out.

Alan Turing's 'suicide' in doubt

Alan Turing, the British mathematical genius and codebreaker born 100 years ago on 23 June, may not have committed suicide, as is widely believed.

Turing expert Prof Jack Copeland has questioned the evidence that was presented at the 1954 inquest.

He believes the evidence would not today be accepted as sufficient to establish a suicide verdict.

Indeed, he argues, Turing's death may equally probably have been an accident.

What is well known and accepted is that Alan Turing died of cyanide poisoning.

His housekeeper famously found the 41-year-old mathematician dead in his bed, with a half-eaten apple on his bedside table.

It is widely said that Turing had been haunted by the story of the poisoned apple in the fairy tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and had resorted to the same desperate measure to end the persecution he was suffering as a result of his homosexuality.

But according to Prof Copeland, it was Turing's habit to take an apple at bedtime, and that it was quite usual for him not to finish it; the half-eaten remains found near his body cannot be seen as an indication of a deliberate act.

Indeed, the police never tested the apple for the presence of cyanide.

Moreover, Prof Copeland emphasises, a coroner these days would demand evidence of pre-meditation before announcing a verdict of suicide, yet nothing in the accounts of Turing's last days suggest he was in anything but a cheerful mood.

?Start Quote

We have... been recreating the narrative of Turing's life, and we have recreated him as an unhappy young man who committed suicide. But the evidence is not there?

End Quote Prof Jack Copeland University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand

He had left a note on his office desk, as was his practice, the previous Friday to remind himself of the tasks to be done on his return after the Bank Holiday weekend.

Nevertheless, at the inquest, the coroner, Mr JAK Ferns declared: "In a man of his type, one never knows what his mental processes are going to do next." What he meant by "of his type" is unclear.

The motive for suicide is easy to imagine. In 1952, after he had reported a petty burglary, Turing found himself being investigated for "acts of gross indecency" after he revealed he had had a male lover in his house.

Faced with the prospect of imprisonment, and perhaps with it the loss of the mathematics post he held at Manchester University, which gave him access to one of the world's only computers, Turing accepted the alternative of "chemical castration" - hormone treatment that was supposed to suppress his sexual urges.

It is often repeated that the chemicals caused him to grow breasts, though Turing is only known to have mentioned this once.

The authorities' continuing interest in Turing became apparent in 1953 when a gay Norwegian acquaintance, Kjell, announced by postcard his intention to visit him at his Wilmslow home, but mysteriously never arrived.

Turing told a friend, by way of explanation: "At one stage, the police over the north of England were out searching for him."

With six decades of hindsight, these oppressive attentions, the nation's failure to appreciate his wartime contributions, his apparent sidelining at the Manchester computer department, have led to a tragic picture of Turing being hounded during his last years, and suicide being a natural outcome.

But Prof Copeland argues that on the contrary, Turing's career was at an intellectual high, and that he had borne his treatment "with good humour".

Of the Kjell affair, Turing had written that "for sheer incident, it rivalled the Arnold [gross-indecency] story"; and immediately after his conviction had told a friend: "The day of the trial was by no means disagreeable.

"Whilst in custody with the other criminals, I had a very agreeable sense of irresponsibility, rather like being back at school."

On the face of it, these are not the expressions of someone ground down by adversity.

A centenary celebration at Cambridge University considers Turing's legacy

What is more, Turing had tolerated the year-long hormone treatment and the terms of his probation ("my shining virtue was terrific") with amused fortitude, and another year had since passed seemingly without incident.

In statements to the coroner, friends had attested to his good humour in the days before his death.

His neighbour described him throwing "such a jolly [tea] party" for her and her son four days before he died.

His close friend Robin Gandy, who had stayed with him the weekend before, said that Turing "seemed, if anything, happier than usual".

Yet the coroner recorded a verdict of suicide "while the balance of his mind was disturbed".

Prof Copeland believes the alternative explanation made at the time by Turing's mother is equally likely.

Turing had cyanide in his house for chemical experiments he conducted in his tiny spare room - the nightmare room he had dubbed it.

He had been electrolysing solutions of the poison, and electroplating spoons with gold, a process that requires potassium cyanide. Although famed for his cerebral powers, Turing had also always shown an experimental bent, and these activities were not unusual for him.

But Turing was careless, Prof Copeland argues.

The electrolysis experiment was wired into the ceiling light socket.

On another occasion, an experiment had resulted in severe electric shocks.

And he was known for tasting chemicals to identify them.

Perhaps he had accidentally put his apple into a puddle of cyanide.

Or perhaps, more likely, he had accidentally inhaled cyanide vapours from the bubbling liquid.

Prof Copeland notes that the nightmare room had a "strong smell" of cyanide after Turing's death; that inhalation leads to a slower death than ingestion; and that the distribution of the poison in Turing's organs was more consistent with inhalation than with ingestion.

In his authoritative biography, Andrew Hodges suggests that the experiment was a ruse to disguise suicide, a scenario Turing had apparently mentioned to a friend in the past.

But Jack Copeland argues the evidence should be taken at face value - that an accidental death is certainly consistent with all the currently known circumstances.

The problem, he complains, is that the investigation was conducted so poorly that even murder cannot be ruled out. An "open verdict", recognising this degree of ignorance, would be his preferred position.

None of this excuses the treatment of Turing during his final years, says Prof Copeland.

"Turing was hounded," he told the BBC, adding: "Yet he remained cheerful and humorous."

"The thing is to tell the truth in so far as we know it, and not to speculate.

"In a way we have in modern times been recreating the narrative of Turing's life, and we have recreated him as an unhappy young man who committed suicide. But the evidence is not there.

"The exact circumstances of Turing's death will probably always be unclear," Prof Copeland concludes.

"Perhaps we should just shrug our shoulders, and focus on Turing's life and extraordinary work."

Roland Pease has produced two episodes of Discovery on the BBC World Service devoted to Turing. In the first, he follows the events leading up to Turing's design for a fully programmable computer (Ace) at the National Physical Laboratory. In the second episode, he explores the life and legacy of Turing.

Rory Cellan-Jones visits the exhibition dedicated to the life and work of Alan Turing.

Singles try to sniff out love at pheromone parties

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Sniff your way to love? Singles who have attended so-called pheromone parties haven't ruled it out.

The get-togethers ? which have been held in New York and Los Angeles and are planned for other cities ? ask guests to submit a slept-in T-shirt that will be smelled by other participants.

Then, voila! You can pick your partner based on scent, or so the theory goes.

The parties started out as an experimental matchmaking fest by a California woman weary of online dating, but it turns out they also have a root in science. Researchers have shown that humans can use scent to sort out genetic combinations that could lead to weaker offspring.

At a dimly lit art gallery in Los Angeles on a recent night, partygoers huddled around several tables covered with plastic freezer bags stuffed with shirts and an index card bearing a number. Once they found one they liked, a photographer snapped a picture of them holding the bag and projected it onto a wall so the shirt's rightful owner could step forward and meet his or her odor's admirer.

Konstantin Bakhurin, a 25-year-old neuroscience graduate student, said he bypassed the bags that smelled like baby powder or laundry detergent or perfume in search of something more unique: the owner of a distinctive yellow-T-shirt whose fragrance he described as "spicy."

"I think it's probably a bit more pseudoscience," said Bakhurin, who attended with two fellow graduate students from University of California, Los Angeles. "I just kind of came here for kicks to see what would happen."

The parties are a marked contrast to the proliferation of online dating sites, which demand countless details from singles, and in some ways are taking romance back to its most primal beginnings.

Judith Prays, a web developer who now lives in Atlanta, said she came up with the idea for pheromone parties after she failed to find a match online. Prays said she'd date men for a month or so before things soured until she started seeing a man who wasn't what she was looking for and wound up in a two-year relationship.

What she remembered was his smell.

"Even when he smelled objectively bad, I thought he smelled really good," the 25-year-old said. "And so I thought, OK, maybe I should be dating based on smell?"

At first, it was an experiment. Prays invited 40 friends to a party in New York and asked them to sleep in a T-shirt for three nights, put it in a plastic bag and freeze it, then bring it to the party. Bags were coded with blue cards for men and pink for women and numbered so the shirts' owners could pinpoint their admirers.

The night was a hit, Prays said, adding that half a dozen couples hooked up and one pair formed a relationship. Since then, she has held similar parties in New York and Los Angeles and is planning others for Atlanta, San Francisco and perhaps elsewhere.

Many partygoers chuckled at the idea of finding a match in a smelly T-shirt. But that's not to say there isn't some science supporting the idea.

Research studies using similar T-shirt experiments have shown that people prefer different human scents. But whose smell they prefer is dictated by a set of genes that influence our immune response ? which researchers say is nature's way of preventing inbreeding and preserving genetic adaptations developed over time.

"Humans can pick up this incredibly small chemical difference with their noses," said Martha McClintock, founder of the Institute for Mind and Biology at the University of Chicago. "It is like an initial screen."

In one such study, McClintock and her colleagues had participants sniff inside a covered box without knowing that in some cases they were smelling worn T-shirts. What they found was people preferred the odors of those who had different genetic makeups from their own, but not radically different.

In Los Angeles, several dozen 20-somethings headed to the gallery at night in search of romance ? or at least out of curiosity. They posed playfully for the photographer with shirts they liked, hoping the owner might step forward and say hello.

Few did. Some admitted they had seen their number flashed on the wall but were too shy to identify themselves.

But there was still plenty of chatter as beer-sipping singles turned up their noses at bags that smelled like hiker's sweat and their aunt's old carpet and took a second whiff of sweet and musky fragrances they liked but couldn't peg ? a playful exercise that served as an icebreaker to what otherwise could have been an awkward gathering of strangers.

Karen Arellano threw back her head and laughed after trying a handful of bags that reeked of sweat, coffee and even weed ? but said she didn't really come to the party in search of love.

"I don't think I'm going to find anything more than, 'Hi, how are you,' a conversation," the 29-year-old baker said. "That's expectation enough."

Prays said she's also learned from the experience that while scent is powerful, it isn't enough to detect a good match.

"Animals have babies and they move on, and that's what the pheromone party is," said Prays, who may start including a few pertinent details on the index cards, like a person's relationship expectations. "The most successful thing about it is it opens up conversation."

Robert Tornambe, M.D.: Coping With the Death of Your Pet

Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really. -- Agnes Sligh Turnball

Our dog Lily died today. HuffPost readers may remember her, as she was featured in a blog I wrote last year about the concept of canine-assisted therapy. She was a therapy dog who visited hospitals, nursing homes, schools for children with learning disabilities and even a juvenile correction center. She was a working dog, a 120-pound bullmastiff who was kind, goofy, as gentle as a lamb, and a beloved member of our family.

2012-06-21-picturewithlily.jpg

Ironically, the most popular therapy dog at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center succumbed to lymph node cancer. She was only 7 years old. She is survived by my wife and Lily's therapy partner, Valerie, our two children (Lily's human siblings) and me. I can't begin to describe the sorrow and grief that I am feeling right now. More importantly, how can I help my wife and children cope?

For starters, it is important to comprehend the five stages of grief.

Denial: "This can't be happening to me."
Anger: "Why is this happening? Who is to blame?"
Bargaining: "Make this not happen, and in return I will ____."
Depression: "I'm too sad to do anything."
Acceptance: "I'm at peace with what happened."

It is necessary to experience and deal with each stage. It is especially important to recognize and channel the anger phase. Do not deny or hide it, express it. Cry, yell, scream, or whatever it takes to allow the anger to dissipate and permit you to grieve and eventually accept the loss.

Grieving is a process without a predetermined time frame. The level of grief depends on several factors, including your age and personality, age of the pet, and the circumstances of the pet's death. Some people take longer than others. Often, single pet owners who live alone take longer to grieve because their dog or cat played such a large role in their lives. The same is true for disabled people who lose their therapy- or seeing-eye dog, because the animal was a companion and a vital enabler.

Grief can be a confusing experience for children. The death of a pet is often the first time children are subjected to such sorrow. Our kids literally grew up with Lily, but our youngest son Luca could not understand why he was unable to cry when Lily first died. I explained to him that we all grieve differently, while he may not cry now, it may happen tomorrow, or much later, and that is OK. Experts say that kids usually react to the way parents behave in many situations, and grieving is a good example. If parents react irrationally or dramatically during the grieving process, children mimic that response. Adults should not hide their emotions either. It is normal for a man to cry, for instance, and kids must understand that. Repressed emotions can be extremely unhealthy.

If possible, allow your children to say goodbye. If euthanasia is necessary, be honest, don't tell them that the pet went to sleep or went away, as that will cause confusion and resentment when they do fully understand. Explain the circumstances and try to get them to talk about it and ask questions. Create a memento, a photo or paw print for them to have forever, but especially during the grieving process. Don't rush to replace the pet right away; allow your child to finish grieving.

Psychologists also often offer these recommendations.

- Don't let anyone tell you how you feel. Many friends are not "pet people" and do not understand or appreciate your angst. Avoid those friends for a while.

- Reach out to those people who have pets or to those who have experienced loss of a beloved dog or cat for consolation and company.

- Rituals help healing. Have a memorial service or funeral to honor your pet and allow you to work toward closure.

- Create a legacy. Plant a tree or donate to an animal shelter or vet school in the name of your deceased pet.

- Look after yourself. The grieving process is exhausting. Try to eat in a healthy fashion, drink lots of water (crying is dehydrating!), exercise and watch the alcohol intake. Treat the grieving process like a marathon, and stay healthy to finish.

- Maintain an active schedule. Replace time normally spent with your pet with other activities to keep you busy to avoid depression. Volunteer at a hospital or nursing home. When you are ready, volunteer at an animal shelter or ask to walk a friend's dog on occasion. Stay busy!

I am certain that many of you have lost a beloved pet. Please write in and share your ideas and recommendations for dealing with the death of your pet.

Just researching and writing this blog has been extremely helpful for me to deal with the loss of our Lily. Just the same, please excuse me while I have a good long cry. Farewell my girl.

The pop that wasn't: Life after Facebook's IPO

NEW YORK (AP) ? It's been a month since Facebook's IPO fell flat and in that time, the market for initial public offerings has collapsed.

No company has gone public since May 18, compared with 19 in the same period a year ago. Fourteen offerings have been withdrawn or delayed, according to Dealogic.

There are no public offerings scheduled this week. Of course, thanks to the European debt crisis, financial markets haven't been terribly conducive to IPOs. Still, venture capitalists say the fallout from Facebook's rocky IPO is making companies ?especially those in the technology sector? cautious about going public.

"It pretty much wiped the counter clean for the time being," says Francis Gaskins, president of researcher IPOdesktop. "It sucked the air out of the room."

It wasn't supposed to be this way. The Internet industry that captivated the investment world in the late 1990s and went bust as the next decade began had pinned its hopes on Facebook's stock market debut to signify the beginning of a new era. In Silicon Valley, the IPO had been billed as "the big one", an earth-shaking event that would unleash a wave of investment in technology start-ups.

Instead, from the first-day-pop-that-wasn't to the investor lawsuits and falling share prices that followed, Facebook's $16 billion initial public offering has resulted in nothing but trepidation among tech entrepreneurs and those who supply their early funding.

"There were a lot of venture capitalists and entrepreneurs that really have been waiting for Facebook to go public," says Sam Hamadeh, the CEO of PrivCo, a research firm that follows privately held companies. "Everybody's been told just wait 'til May 18, Facebook is going to pop, everybody will get very excited about it ... and then you have the opportunity to go public this summer with that halo effect."

That bright, glowing aura never materialized. After pricing at $38 the night before its market debut, Facebook's stock shot as high as $45 before settling at $38.23 at the end of its first trading day. Since then, the stock dropped as low as $25.52. On Thursday, it was trading at $32.05 down 16 percent from its IPO price.

Facebook Inc. has joined the ranks of other recently-public Internet companies that are trading below their IPO prices. There's Zynga Inc., whose games are played mainly on Facebook and Pandora Media Inc., the online radio service. Groupon Inc., which offers online deals to subscribers, went public on November 4 at $20 and is now trading around $10.

And Friday, May 18, will be remembered as the day Facebook's much-ballyhooed IPO landed flat on its belly, marred by technical glitches at the Nasdaq Stock Market that delayed the stock's trading by half an hour. There's now agreement among investors that Facebook may not be worth as much as Amazon.com, or half as much as Google ? not yet at least. The Menlo Park, Calif., company's stock is down 17 percent since its first day of trading.

Even Morgan Stanley, the highly-regarded underwriting bank that ushered the likes of Apple, Netscape and Google into the public markets, has come under fire for its handling of Facebook's IPO. Critics accuse the bank of offering too many shares at too high a price. They also claim it gave special treatment to its high-end clients.

Now, a host of companies are feeling a different kind of Facebook effect. The social network's stock has weighed on the stocks of other social media companies. Zynga has seen its stock fall 18 percent since Facebook started trading. And it may have influenced online travel site Kayak Software Inc. to delay its IPO. Though Kayak did not have a set IPO date, it had filed its intention to go public more than a year ago and had been expected to start trading soon. The company said recently that it is waiting for market conditions to get better.

"The mood is pessimistic right now," Hamadeh says. "But everybody is still holding out hope that the IPO market will recover, that somehow Facebook's stock will recover."

Of the fourteen IPOs that have been postponed since May 18, it's unclear if any of those cancellations relate directly to Facebook's experience. One was Tria Beauty, which makes laser hair removal devices and planned to raise $64 million. Another, Corsair Components, makes computer gaming parts. Both cited poor market conditions.

That much is true ? Facebook's IPO capped the worst week this year for the U.S. stock market.

Sanjay Sabnani, the CEO of online community network CrowdGather, says the Internet industry needed "a catalyst that captured the imagination of the American investment public, that the American dream is still alive in the Internet sector."

"The good news is that you can't really argue that it didn't bring attention," added Sabnani, whose company started trading on the Over the Counter Bulletin Board in the spring of 2008.

But the IPO also stirred suspicions that Facebook is overvalued, that it's not growing fast enough and that the consumer shift from personal computers to mobile devices will hurt its growth.

"The bad news is that it wasn't explosive," says Sabnani. "It didn't bring money hand-over-fist into the Internet sector."

Steve Harrick, partner at Silicon Valley venture capital firm Institutional Venture Partners, says Facebook's IPO ?the Nasdaq glitch, especially, as well as the last-minute increase of the stock's initial offering price, "really rattled" the confidence of retail investors, average people who are already the most skittish in any IPO.

But Harrick, who joined IVP in 2001, says his firm "is not shrinking away" from the public markets with its companies.

"I think there is still a lot of demand for great technology companies," he says.

There are 165 companies that have filed their intention to go public, says Nick Einhorn, an analyst at Renaissance, an IPO advisory firm. This might be understated, though, if companies have started to use the confidential filing process that's part of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups, or JOBS Act designed to help startups and small businesses grow. The number of IPOs, Einhorn added, has generally increased over the past three years, as the U.S. has emerged from the 2008 financial crisis.

While there are a lot of companies waiting for an IPO, none are Facebook's size and caliber ? those come around once every few years. Facebook served as the grand finale for a crop of big-name Internet IPOs in the past year or so, beginning with professional networking service LinkedIn Corp., then Groupon, Zynga and Yelp. There are a handful of large start-up companies that have not signaled their intention to go public, such as Twitter, the San Francisco-based short messaging service.

One deal that doesn't go as expected is unlikely to dissuade most of them from entering the public market, Einhorn added. There are all sorts of benefits to an IPO. Among them: raising capital, providing liquidity to existing shareholders and raising the company's profile.

"This one had a lot of visibility and a lot of moving parts," says Deepak Kamra, general partner at Menlo Park, Calif.-based VC firm Canaan Partners. He added that, among the venture capital lot, Facebook's IPO had become a "huge distraction in daily life."

"I hope Facebook is not distracted," he says. "In terms of VC people, I have not heard of anybody pulling an offering or even thinking about it. But (the thing) to watch is whether they start moving away from Morgan Stanley as the underwriter. They don't want to go through this again."

For many in the technology sector, Facebook's IPO doesn't offer lessons or cautionary tales of any kind ?because it was an anomaly. It was the highest-valued U.S. company ever to go public, and the third-highest in the world. It's a household name and the amount of money it raised put its IPO in a class of its own. That brought a lot of attention, anticipation, and a higher-than-usual number of regular "retail" investors interested in the stock.

"If you are a $100 million or $200 million company going to go public, you're not going to have the same scrutiny that Facebook had," Einhorn says.

CrowdGather's Sabnani says he's not disappointed with Facebook's IPO. He thinks the market is more sensible now than in the late 1990s, the height of the infamous Internet bubble. He should know. In 1999, he was the president of a publicly traded company, Venture Catalyst, which helped startups get their footing. The company is still around but it's no longer public.

"We know a lot more about what's going to happen with the Internet," he says. "Back then it was...like digging for oil. We didn't know what was going to happen."

Now, companies that are already profitable are going public. Yet they are not seeing the eye-popping stock price increases once they begin trading. The biggest one of them all, Facebook, the one with 900 million active users, with $3.7 billion in revenue and $1 billion in net income last year, certainly didn't.

"The No. 1 piece of evidence against a bubble mentality is what happened with Facebook," Sabnani says. "The fact that Facebook is a soft IPO shows how much more rational the market is now."

Duncan Davidson, managing director at VC firm Bullpen Capital agrees. The Internet bubble of the 1990s saw a lot of big IPOs burst because "there were crappy companies going out."

"Facebook is not a crappy company. This is just a blip in the poorly handled offering," he says.
