Nintendo, Electronic Arts, and Sony drop support for SOPA

Three of the biggest video games developers have dropped their support for the Stop Online Piracy Act. Nintendo, Electronic Arts, and Sony, all who supported the bill when it was first created, had their names recently removed from the list of supporters, or have they.

If you take a look at the bill it?s only Sony Entertainment that has pulled their support, Sony Music and Music Publishing are still listed on the site.?As well, Nintendo is still in?support?of the?Protect IP Act?that is a counterpart of the SOPA. So while a few companies have pulled their support from the bills, a large number of them are still in favor of them.

It?s an interesting development, and it leaves us asking a lot of questions about why they each company supported the bill in the first place. ?Both acts being pushed forward by congress are about controlling the tide of piracy that has been ?taking away? profits from various industries. But according to a survey, pirates are ten times more music online than non-pirates.

So what is this all really about?

The Protect IP Act is designed to block websites who are actively infringing or counterfeiting goods, so in other words if they?re doing something like singing copyrighted song then the website can be blacklisted. Or if they?re taking news from a various news sources, like this article is, then Just Push Start could be blacklisted. Controlling content is the issue both SOPA and the Protect IP Act are trying to tackle, but some companies might be showing the bills reach too far.

Nintendo, EA, and Sony pulling their support for the bill is a good first start, maybe even a sign of goodwill or a way to cover themselves if it gets passed, but we?ll have to wait for new developments to see who else will be pulling away.

Wendy?s re-enters Japan with $16 burger

By Tiffany Hsu

LOS ANGELES (L.A. Times) ? Wendy?s is making a high-end re-entry into Japan with a $16 burger festooned with foie gras and truffles.

The third-largest fast-food chain in the United States (potentially soon to supplant Burger King for the No. 2 spot) took a breather from Japan for two years but returned this week to launch a restaurant in a luxury shopping area in Tokyo.

That franchisee developed the luxurious 1,280-yen (about $16.45) sandwich ? the folks at Wendy?s corporate offices said they ?really don?t have anything to do with it.? The goose liver confection won?t show up in the United States anytime soon ? Wendy?s said its most expensive item here is likely a salad or a triple cheeseburger, in the $5 to $6 range.

Besides, customers in California already have their pick of foie gras sandwiches ? at least before the delicacy is outlawed in the state next year. There?s one sandwich for $16 at the Torrance restaurant Buffalo Fire Department, and another ? for $26 ? at RH in West Hollywood.

Wendy?s Chief Executive Emil Brolick has said the company will aim eventually to triple its number of foreign restaurants to about 1,000 eateries.

Illini Arrive In California 12/27/11

Oakland, California-The Fighting Illini have arrived in California to begin preparations for the Fight Hunter Bowl in San Francisco.? The game will be played Saturday.? The 6-6 Illini will face the 6-7 UCLA Bruins.

Tuesday the Illini held their first workout in California at tiny Laney College.

A victory for the Illini would take some of the sting out of their second half collapse this season.? They've lost six straight games and head coach Ron Zook was fired.

A victory would also make Illinois history because it would be the first time the Illini have won bowl games in back-to-back years.

Illini quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase is looking forward to that opportunity.? To hear his comments click on the media player.

Apple applies for facial recognition patent, wants to let iDevices get to know you better

Your momma always said your handsome mug would take you places. Now it might allow you to access your iPad. An Apple patent application released today describes a facial recognition system that requires minimal computing power, and works whether you're indoors or out -- we don't use our tablets and phones in a photo booth, after all. The technology works by comparing a current image of your mug to a reference model user profile made using "high information" portions of the human face, like eyes and mouths. Translation: it'll take a picture, compare it against the pictures associated with various user accounts on the device and decide if the two images are similar enough to grant you access. Because this is just an application, it's safe to say we won't be seeing this kind of facial recognition in iOS anytime soon, but let's hope it works better than the ICS version if it does.

Update: An important thing to note is that Apple applied for this patent long before Android's Face Unlock debuted a few months back. The paper work was first submitted on June 29th, 2010 -- it's just now being disclosed to the public.

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) ? A department store Santa Claus who died with his wife and three grandchildren in a Christmas morning house fire in Connecticut spent a long career trying to prevent danger as safety chief at a liquor company in Kentucky.

A day after fire engulfed his daughter's upscale house in Stamford, Lomer Johnson was remembered fondly as a stickler for safety by a former boss at Louisville, Ky.-based liquor maker Brown-Forman Corp., where Johnson retired from his job as safety and security director several years ago.

"He spent his career trying to keep others safe," retired Brown-Forman executive Robert Holmes Jr. said Monday in a telephone interview. "And the irony is that he dies in a fire."

The home's owner, New York advertising executive Madonna Badger, and a male acquaintance escaped the blaze, which killed her parents, who were visiting for the holidays, and her three daughters, a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins, police said.

The severely damaged $1.7 million house was torn down after the buildings department determined it was unsafe and ordered it razed, local fire Chief Antonio Conte said.

Neighbors said they awoke shortly before 5 o'clock Christmas morning to the sound of screaming and rushed outside to help but could do nothing as flames devoured the large, turreted home.

The acquaintance who escaped the fire with Badger was a contractor working on the home, police said.

Interviews with them would be finished Monday, Conte said. He had no details on the investigation, and no information about the cause of the fire was released.

Johnson most recently worked as a Santa this year at the flagship store of Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, a store spokeswoman said.

"Mr. Johnson was Saks Fifth Avenue's beloved Santa, and we are heartbroken about this terrible tragedy," spokeswoman Julia Bently said in a statement.

Holmes, who worked with Johnson for more than a decade at Brown-Forman, remembered his co-worker as a big man with white hair and a commanding presence.

"He was a man of not a lot of words, but when Lomer spoke or gave his opinion, it was always well thought out," Holmes said.

He said he was a bit surprised that the longtime security chief had become a department store Santa but added, "I could see Lomer doing something like that because Lomer had a passion for people."

During Johnson's long career with Brown-Forman, whose many brands include Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey and Southern Comfort, he was responsible for security and safety at the company's headquarters and production plants. His responsibilities included helping plan fire drills, Holmes said.

"He spent his life as a safety professional making sure our facilities were safe from fire," Holmes said. "And in the event there was a fire, that people knew what to do in terms of getting out of the buildings."

Badger, an ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York-based Badger & Winters Group. She was treated at a hospital and was discharged by Sunday evening, a hospital supervisor said. Her whereabouts Monday were unknown.

The acquaintance also was hospitalized, but his condition wasn't released.

Property records show Badger bought the five-bedroom, waterfront home for $1.7 million last year. The house was situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

The lot where the house stood was covered with charred debris and cordoned off by police with tape on Monday. Passers-by left floral bouquets, stuffed animals and candles.

Neighbor Tim Abbazia, who did not know the victims, said the fire occurred in a neighborhood where century-old homes are common and would make everyone assess fire safety. He said it could not have been any more tragic.

"Regardless of which day it happened, I don't think it could be any worse than it is," he said.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, a former mayor of Stamford, offered his condolences to Badger and her family in a statement and said her loss "defies explanation."

The fire was Stamford's deadliest since a 1987 blaze that also killed five people, Conte said.

Stone, Huberdeau dominate in Canada?s win over Finland

By The Canadian Press
Published: December 26, 2011 5:46 PM
Updated: December 26, 2011 7:54 PM

Canada 8 Finland 1

EDMONTON ? Mark Stone and Jonathan Huberdeau had instant chemistry playing on opposite wings during the Canadian junior hockey team?s summer camp in August.

The two big forwards clicked again and dominated Canada?s 8-1 win over Finland to open the world junior hockey championship Monday.

Stone, who plays for the Western Hockey League?s Brandon Wheat Kings, scored a hat trick. Huberdeau of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League?s Saint John Sea Dogs had a five-point game with a goal and four assists.

Huberdeau will be a key player for Canada in its bid to re-claim the gold medal at the world junior championship. He was the third overall pick in the NHL draft this year by the Florida Panthers and was the Memorial Cup MVP last season.

He couldn?t fully participate in the Canadian team?s selection camp earlier this month because of a broken bone in his foot. Canada?s exhibition game last week against Switzerland was Huberdeau?s first since Nov. 7.

Canadian head coach Don Hay kept Huberdeau on the team because he?s a difference-maker and also complements Stone so well.

Stone has hands that are anything but as the Ottawa Senators draft pick and Winnipeg native leads the WHL in scoring. Stone and Huberdeau are both over six foot one and difficult for the opposition to contain.

?Stone just continues to score goals for us and it?s great to see Jonathan get some confidence and start the tournament off with a game like that,? Hay said.

?They?re two different guys, but they do good work in their areas of the ice. Mark does a great job in front of the net. He?s got great hands for a big guy. Jonathan really sees the ice well and can put pucks in the small areas.?

Buoyed by the roars of the 16,647 at Rexall Place, the host country put in a complete performance with solid goaltending, smart defensive plays and a hard-charging attack.

Brendan Gallagher of the Vancouver Giants, Niagara IceDogs defenceman Dougie Hamilton and forward Ryan Strome and Brett Connolly of the NHL?s Tampa Bay Lightning also scored for Canada.

Alexander Ruuttu, son of former NHL player Christian Ruuttu, scored Finland?s lone goal early in the second period to temporarily pull his country within one goal.

Canada?s team at the world junior hockey championship suffered a major blow in its tournament opener.

Forward Devante Smith-Pelly broke his left foot after blocking a shot in the second period of Canada?s 8-1 rout of Finland on Monday and will miss the remainder of the tournament.

The Anaheim Ducks forward, one of only two NHL players on the Canadian team, cannot be replaced on the 22-man roster.

The only situation in which a team could add another player at this point in the tournament would be in the case of a goaltender injury.

Hay went with experience in net by giving Mark Visentin of the IceDogs the first start of the tournament. The Phoenix Coyotes prospect made 24 saves on 25 shots for the win.

Visentin was Canada?s starting goaltender for the medal round of the 2011 tournament in Buffalo, N.Y. His big save on Teemu Pulkkinen with three minutes to go in the first period Monday preserved Canada?s 2-0 lead heading into the second.

?I?m happy with my performance tonight,? said Visentin. ?Obviously there?s little things I?d like to fix up. I let (another) Phoenix draftee Ruuttu score. Good for him. He?s a good guy, but I only let him get one and one only.?

After giving up four goals on 17 shots in Canada?s final pre-tournament game against Sweden, there were questions whether Hay would go with Visentin or Scott Wedgewood of the Plymouth Whalers.

?It was always going to be Mark in my mind,? Hay said. ?The experience of coming out in front of a crowd like this, he?s been exposed to that last year in Buffalo. When you have a veteran goalie coming back you really have to give him the opportunity to lead off the tournament.?

Finland went with Chris Gibson of the QMJHL?s Chicoutimi Sagueneens in goal. Canada pelted the Los Angeles Kings prospect with 42 shots as Finland?s defence wilted under Canadian pressure.

Canada had beaten the Finns 3-1 in a pre-tournament game in Calgary last week.

?What can I say? Eight-one,? Finland coach Raimo Helminen said. ?I couldn?t prepare our team to play as much as I should. We were not ready, not physically, not mentally in this game at the beginning.?

Canada has Tuesday off before facing the Czech Republic on Wednesday and Denmark the following day. The hosts conclude Pool B play on Saturday versus the United States. The U.S. was to face Denmark in Monday?s later game in Edmonton.

In Calgary, Sweden defeated Latvia 9-4 in a Pool A game with defending champion Russia set to face Switzerland at night.

The top team in each pool earns a bye to the semifinal round. The second and third teams cross over and meet in the quarter-finals.

Ryan Johansen played centre between Huberdeau and Stone during summer camp, but Johansen wasn?t made available to play for Canada by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

So Hay inserted Strome between the two wingers and the New York Islanders prospect thrived there with a goal and three assists.

Stone?s third goal at 4:05 of the third period prompted a cascade of hats from the stands.

?He?s always in the right spot in the slot,? Huberdeau observed. ?He scores a lot of goals. You could see that in exhibition games. He scored in every exhibition game since the beginning so it?s easy to play with him.?

Florida Utilities Fume as EPA Tells Dirty Coal Power Plants To Clean Up Or Clam Up

FlaglerLive | December 22, 2011

EPA this. (Iskander Ben Amor)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday released controversial new air-pollution standards that could force expensive upgrades at some Florida power plants ? but have been long-sought by environmental and health advocates.

The standards will require hundreds of coal-fired power plants across the country to make improvements to curb emissions of mercury and other pollutants such as arsenic and nickel.

Progress Energy Florida and Gulf Power Co. have repeatedly raised concerns about the standards in recent months, though both said Wednesday they needed to review details of the final standards to gauge their impact.

?By the EPA?s own estimate, this rule is the most expensive in its history and it has the potential to have significant impacts on consumers,? Bill Johnson, president and chief executive officer of Progress Energy, the parent of the Florida subsidiary. ?We will work collaboratively with our state regulators to develop implementation strategies that will ensure compliance in the most cost-effective way for our customers and that protect the reliability of our system.?

But EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said during a news conference at a Washington children?s hospital that the health benefits of the standards will ?far outweigh? the compliance costs for utilities. Mercury, for example, can cause neurological damage in children.

?In and of itself, this is a great victory for public health, especially for the health of our children,? Jackson said.

The standards will have varying impacts on electric utilities, which the EPA says generally will have four years to comply. For example, Tampa Electric Co. spokeswoman Cherie Jacobs said the utility has spent about $1.2 billion during the past decade on power-plant upgrades and has reduced mercury emissions by about 90 percent.

?Because of those investments, the company is well-positioned to comply with the EPA?s new rule within the proposed timeline,? Jacobs said in an e-mail.

Similarly, Florida Power & Light, the state?s largest utility, relies heavily on natural gas to fuel plants. The company has said it is well-positioned to comply with the regulations.

The standards stem, at least in part, from a 2000 determination by the EPA that steps should be taken to control mercury emissions from power plants. But as the EPA has worked to finalize the standards in recent months, the agency has drawn criticism from some utilities and Republicans.

In October, Florida Republican Attorney General Pam Bondi joined 24 other states in calling for EPA to delay implementation of the standards.

?We cannot allow Floridians, many of whom are already suffering financial hardships, to bear the brunt of costly federal regulations,? Bondi said at the time.

Before the release Wednesday, the EPA made changes to earlier proposals for the standards. Sandy Sims, a spokeswoman for Pensacola-based Gulf Power, said the company will review the final version and look at options for complying.

?Our main concern is how best to continue to provide reliable, affordable and environmentally responsible electricity to our customers,? she said in an e-mail.

But Kirk Fordham, chief executive officer of the Everglades Foundation, praised the standards.

?We applaud the Obama administration for issuing this rule,? Fordham said. ?It?s a long time coming. Any global efforts to reduce methylmercury benefits Florida, not just the Everglades but throughout the state.?

Demi Lovato Slams Disney For Eating Disorder Joke On 'Shake It Up'

Demi Lovato is not impressed with Disney, and she's letting them know it. The singer and former star of "Sonny With A Chance" is furious over a joke about eating disorders on Disney Channel's "Shake It Up."

Lovato entered treatment for eating disorders and cutting in October 2010, and she isn't laughing at a character who quipped, "I could just eat you up, well if I ate."

On Friday night the 19-year-old launched into a series of tweets expressing her distaste at the 'joke', writing:

Lovato added, "And is it just me or are the actress' [on Disney Channel] getting THINNER AND THINNER.... I miss the days of RAVEN and LIZZIE MCGUIRE," referencing actresses Raven Symone and Hilary Duff -- who have both dealt with public pressure to lose weight.

Lovato finished up her rant to Disney with a straightforward tweet, telling her former employer:

Lovato has been open about her battle with bulimia and even recently returned to Timberline Knolls --the Illinois treatment center where she sought help last year -- to speak to the center's current patients.

Since she left rehab in January 2011, Lovato hasn't hesitated to defend herself from those who feel it necessary to comment on her weight. In August, Lovato's weight became a trending topic on Twitter and she responded to haters by pointing out, "I've gained weight. Get over it. That's what happens when you get out of treatment for AN EATING DISORDER."

With Lovato's tweets reaching more than five million Twitter followers, we have to wonder if Disney will pay attention to her message.

Kudos to Demi for speaking up, since eating disorders are rampant in Hollywood:

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: USC QB Matt Barkley to return for senior season

LOS ANGELES ? Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley has decided to return for his senior season and put off the NFL for another year.

With USC coach Lane Kiffin and his family in attendance, Barkley announced Thursday that while he feels prepared for the NFL, he has unfinished business with the Trojans. His announcement set off cheers from the roughly 200 people who attended his news conference at USC?s Heritage Hall.

?I am staying so I can finish what I started,? Barkley said.

Barkley is coming off a spectacular season in which he led the Trojans to a 10-2 finish and the No. 5 ranking in the country. Because of NCAA sanctions, USC was not allowed to play in the postseason.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound quarterback has been projected as a first-round pick in the NFL draft, in the top 10 overall on some boards.

Barkley was the latest in a heralded lineup of USC quarterbacks that?s included Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Mark Sanchez.

Barkley had an uneven first season with the Trojans, making some questionable decisions that led to 14 interceptions. Still, he threw for over 2,700 yards and 15 touchdowns to become the only freshman semifinalist for the Davey O?Brien Award as the nation?s best quarterback.

Barkley developed into a mature leader by his sophomore season, again throwing for over 2,700 yards, with 26 TDs, a completion rate of 62 percent and 12 interceptions. He also handled questions about USC?s sanctions with poise, never shying away from talking about the program?s difficulties.

As a junior, he developed into one of the country?s best quarterbacks, throwing for 3,528 yards and 39 touchdowns with only seven interceptions on a team that one of the best in the country the last half of the season. The Trojans won seven of their final eight games to climb the polls, though had to endure second straight bowl-less season thanks to sanctions that end next season.

USC left tackle Matt Kalil declared for the NFL draft last week, but on Wednesday safety T.J. McDonald said he was returning for his senior year. Now with Barkley, the Trojans are loaded and likely one of the front-runners to win next year?s national title. Continued...

Lack of snow means business for golf courses

BOISE -- Local ski areas continue to fret over their lack of snow. But while that's made for a slow skiing season so far, it's meant an extended season (and additional revenue) for another popular activity in the area.

Mark Bryant is one of 30-some golfers who played a round at Warm Springs on Wednesday.

"Some of these guys are out here everyday," said Bryant.

He's one of hundreds, perhaps thousands, who is still playing golf all over Southern Idaho, which is quite something, considering it's officially winter in the Northwest.

Bryant says he's been out five times this year, but he knows other golfers who have been on the course pretty much every day in December.

"It's keeping us busy," said Peter Nichenko, Head Golf Pro at Warm Springs. "We've seen our fair share of golfers."

There's one obvious big reason that golf courses in the area are seeing good business, especially when compared to last year. It's the same reason that ski areas are seeing no business, a complete and total lack of snow.

"It's not good for the ski resorts, but people have to do something in the winter," said Nichenko. "So, we're seeing some extended golf."

"We've been golfing all winter long," said Nichenko. "There's no snow on the mountains, so all the guys who are the skiers, are out here continuing to golf. They're a little unhappy with that, but we've been having a wonderful time."

With no snow on the ground, once the morning frost melts, these courses are open for business. And business is pretty good. It's not what you'd see in the middle of summer, but it's good. That's especially true when compared to last year when most courses were closed by snow in November.

Now, course managers are reporting as many as ten times as much business this December than normal. That means a lot more green for businesses that are usually hibernating this time of year.

"It's good. We get a little bit of revenue," said Nichenko. "It keeps us busy. Better than sitting around, twirling our thumbs."

Course managers say they'll need to see snow sticking to the greens to actually close up shop. Right now, they're not seeing it. There's a possibility they just won't close, staying open until spring, the unofficial start of the next season.

SNL Weekend Update Joke-Off With Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers (VIDEO)

In an episode that was chock-full of cameos by former cast mates, SNL's "Weekend Update" featured one of the biggest thrills of the night, a head-to-head joke-off pitting former co-anchors Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon against Amy Poehler and (current host) Seth Meyers.

After reporting on a toy drive by a local strip club, Meyers quipped that patrons could "give a toy to Charity, and Charity will give it to the manager." But not a moment after, Fallon rolled up to the desk, chiding Meyers for his lackluster performance in the face of such a meaty story. Challenges to a joke off were then made and accepted, and before you knew it, "Update" alums Tina Fey and Amy Poehler had joined the fray.

A dozen or so one-liners later, and television magic had been made.

Gov. vows to prepare Calif. for climate change (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? The United Nations' top climate official joined California Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday to call for renewed efforts in the state to more quickly adapt to the risks that extreme weather and a rising sea pose to agriculture and the coastline.

Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, joined Brown, scientists, former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and billionaire Sir Richard Branson at a conference at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park.

Brown organized the conference, he said, to urge people to "wake up" to extreme weather patterns caused by manmade global warming that he said are already causing damage, and to start thinking about what California ought to do to prepare for worse threats.

He said the state needs to gird itself against floods caused by the faster snowmelts that are already happening, putting pressure on aging levees and threatening the state's agriculture industry.

Warming climate also means longer and more intense wildfire seasons that will threaten homes and infrastructure such as power lines, and affect air quality.

"The greatest obstacle we face is a deep sense of complacency, a sense that things were this way yesterday and were OK and will continue," Brown said.

"It's difficult to see what's not completely obvious ... the buildup of greenhouse gases and climate change, we see it, it's pretty clear," he said.

Brown lumped together global-warming skeptics, including GOP lawmakers and the Cato Institute, calling them a well-funded "cult" that disagrees with the vast majority of published, peer-reviewed climate science.

"The main thing we have to deal with in climate change is the skepticism, the denial and the cult-like behavior of the political lemmings that would take us over the cliff," Brown said.

"The Cato Institute has speakers that say environmentalism is a greater threat to capitalism than Marxism itself," he said, evoking laugher from the audience.

Patrick J. Michaels, a senior fellow in environmental studies at Cato, said the institute has never denied climate change but disputes temperature projections by the UN, saying the sensitivity of temperature to changes in carbon dioxide levels have been overestimated.

"Gov. Brown clearly has not read anything that the Cato Institute has published on global warming. Rather than deny it, we believe that indeed the surface temperature of the planet is about one degree Celsius warmer than it was 120 years ago and that increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide has contributed to this," Michaels said in a statement to The Associated Press.

"On the other hand, it is also clear that the rate of observed warming is falling beneath the midrange projections from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change."

Pachauri said UN studies show that 95 percent of human deaths associated with extreme weather events happen in developing countries.

Yet he said the world's large economies, such as California, can make great strides toward helping reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, especially through the simple task of retrofitting existing buildings.

"If one could retrofit buildings to make them more efficient, and if new buildings could be built to current standards, it's really a win-win situation," Pachauri said. "Overall, the building sector has the largest potential for the reduction of emissions."

In a rare public appearance since leaving office, Schwarzenegger, a Republican, attributed the success California has had in passing its landmark climate change laws to bipartisan cooperation.

While in office, the former governor frequently promoted California's landmark 2006 global warming law, called AB32, which paved the way for the state's cap-and-trade system for controlling greenhouse gas emissions by the worst polluters.

He called the debate over bankrupt solar panel maker Solyndra "narrow minded" in a world moving ever faster toward renewable energy.

"At the same time (as Solyndra) there were restaurants that failed, manufacturers that failed ... all kinds of businesses that failed and no one talks about that," Schwarzenegger said during a short interview.

"They did the best that they could and they made mistakes. That's what happens in business ? if you make mistakes you fail."

Not everybody watching Thursday's conference agreed that California was on the right path.

Dorothy Rothrock of the AB32 Implementation Group said the state has isolated itself by adopting stringent regulations that come at too high a cost.

"As we discuss the risks of climate change and California's future, it is appropriate to consider whether our greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategies will have an impact on climate change," Rothrock said in a statement.

"California has failed to design a cap-and-trade market that will be adopted by other states and jurisdictions in the near future and our efforts alone will not make a difference in global emissions."

Velociraptors' claws helped them eat prey alive

The giant killer claws of dinosaurs such as Velociraptor might have been employed much as birds of prey use similar talons ? as hooks to keep victims from escaping, researchers say.

The discovery could also shed light on the origin of flight in birds, investigators added.

The raptor dinosaurs, made famous by the book and film "Jurassic Park" all possessed unusually large,? curved talons on the second toes of each foot, which they held off the ground like folded switchblades. Known more formally as dromaeosaurids, they included the famous Velociraptor and its larger relative Deinonychus, and were closely related to birds.

Past studies had proposed that the sickle claws of these raptors were used to slash at prey or to help climb onto victims. Now research into modern-day birds of prey suggests a new possible killing technique ? as hooks to lock onto targets.

The second toe
Scientists noted that modern hawks and eagles possess similar enlarged claws on their second toes ? the "digit twos" or "D-2s." These claws "are used as anchors, latching into the prey, preventing their escape," said researcher Denver Fowler, a paleobiologist at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Mont. "We interpret the sickle claw of dromaeosaurids as having evolved to do the same thing ? latching in and holding on." [ In Photos: Birds of Prey ]

"This strategy is only really needed for prey that are about the same size as the predator ? large enough that they might struggle and escape from the feet," Fowler said. "Smaller prey are just squeezed to death, but with large prey all the predator can do is hold on and stop it from escaping, then basically just eat it alive."

"Dromaeosaurs lack any obvious adaptations for dispatching their victims, so just like hawks and eagles, they probably ate their prey alive too," Fowler said.

Other features of the feet of these dinosaurs suggest they followed what Fowler and his colleagues call "Raptor Prey Restraint" ? RPR, or "ripper." For instance, the toe proportions of raptors seem more suited for grasping than running, and the metatarsus ? which includes the bones between the ankles and the toes ? is more adapted for strength than speed.

"Unlike humans, most dinosaurs and birds only walk on their toes, so the metatarsus forms part of the leg itself," Fowler said. "A long metatarsus lets you take bigger strides to run faster, but in dromaeosaurids, the metatarsus is very short."

All in all,Velociraptor and its kin do not seem adapted to simply running after prey.

"When we look at modern birds of prey, a relatively short metatarsus is one feature that gives the bird additional strength in its feet," Fowler said. "Velociraptor and Deinonychus also have a very short, stout metatarsus, suggesting that they had great strength but wouldn't have been very fast runners."

Such behavior intriguingly contrasts with that of their closest known relatives, a very similar group of small carnivorous dinosaurs called troodontids.

"Troodontids and dromaeosaurids started out looking very similar, but over about 60 million years, they evolved in opposite directions, adapting to different niches," said Fowler. "Dromaeosaurids evolved towards stronger, slower feet, suggesting a stealthy ambush predatory strategy, adapted for relatively large prey. By contrast, troodontids evolved a longer metatarsus for speed and a more precise, but weaker grip, suggesting they were swift but probably took relatively smaller prey."

Evolution of flapping
These findings could shed light on the evolution of flight in birds, researchers said. Such feet could have led to the evolution of flapping.

"When a modern hawk has latched its enlarged claws into its prey, it can no longer use the feet for stabilization and positioning," Fowler said. "Instead, the predator flaps its wings so that the prey stays underneath its feet, where it can be pinned down by the predator's body weight. The predator's flapping just maintains its position, and does not need to be as powerful or vigorous as full flight would require. Get on top, stay on top ? it's not trying to fly away."

In much the same way, raptor dinosaurs might have flapped their feathery limbs to keep stable. [ Photos of Fossil Feathers ]

"We see fully formed wings in exquisitely preserved dromaeosaurid fossils, and from biomechanical studies we can show that they were also able to perform a rudimentary flapping stroke," Fowler said. "Most researchers think that they weren't powerful enough to fly ? we propose that the less demanding stability-flapping would be a viable use for such a wing, and this behavior would be consistent with the unusual adaptations of the feet."

"There's an old question on the evolution of flight ? 'what use is half a wing?'" Fowler told LiveScience. "I think we have provided the most complete and defensible answer."

Eventually, grasping feet could have become perching feet.

"A grasping foot is present in the closest relatives of birds, but also in the earliest birds like Archaeopteryx," Fowler said. "We suggest that this originally evolved for predation, but would also have been available for use in perching. This is what we call 'exaptation' ? a structure evolved originally for one purpose that can later be appropriated for a different use."

This research could help explain the anatomy of some recently described peculiar dinosaurs. For instance, the dromaeosaur Balaur, recently unearthed in Romania, "has a very short fused-up metatarsus and a seemingly enlarged claw, not only on the second toe, as in other dromaeosaurs, but the first toe as well," Fowler said. "This is pretty strange, but based on our model, this makes sense."

The short fused-up metatarsus can be seen as an extreme form of the short broad metarsus of other dromaeosaurids, while the enlarged claws on the first toes might serve the same anchoring function as the ones on the second toes do. "Balaur looks like it was a super-dromaeosaur, with the predatory features of normal dromaesaurs taken to extreme measures," Fowler said.

The researchers believe their ideas will open new lines of investigation into dinosaur biology. New ways of looking at old anatomical structures could help solve the mystery of why the features evolved and how they were used.

"Just as you have to get beyond the idea that feet are used just for walking, so we are coming to realize that many unusual structures in modern animals originally evolved for quite different purposes," Fowler said.

The scientists detailed their findings online Dec. 14 in the journal PLoS ONE.

Tony Bennett auctions nude sketch of Lady Gaga (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? A nude charcoal drawing of Lady Gaga by singer Tony Bennett went up for auction on Ebay this week, with all proceeds going to both singers' charities.

The drawing is a charcoal sketch on watercolor paper, and features Lady Gaga reclining nude, signed by "Benedetto," the name Bennett signs all his art works with.

The 85-year-old jazz singer, who earlier this year recorded "Lady is a Tramp" in a duet with Lady Gaga for his album "Duets II," posted on Twitter that he was "thrilled" his portrait was up for auction.

Bennett, 85, sketched the picture while Lady Gaga, 25, posed for photographer Annie Leibovitz for the cover of Vanity Fair magazine's January issue.

Currently, the highest bid is $6,700, and is expected to rise during the course of the auction, which will end on December 19, with all proceeds going to Bennett's Exploring the Arts charity and Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation.
