You might have heard that Google is postponing the retail launch of the Nexus Q, and as compensation they are giving one to everyone who preordered for the low price of free. It's a shocker, and more than anyone expected to hear when we found out that the Q would be held back to add some more functionality. I'll leave the comparison to Oprah for the comments.

We're all busy discussing what sort of awesomesauce Google could bake into the Q, and words like mirroring and Wifi Direct are getting thrown all over my Gtalk. We're just speculating of course, but we're genuinely excited to see what G has in store for the cannonball. All we know for now is that it's been delayed for a it, and that Google is handing them out for free if you preordered.

Which of course means we have to ask, just how many folks did preorder the $300 Nexus Q? Everyone who doesn't have one seems to hate it, and those that do have one (Google handed out about 6,000 of them at Google I/O 2012) seem to be divided about how useful the device is in its current state. We don't imagine very many folks jumped at the chance to get one, and that now everyone wishes they had, but rather than guess, we'll just ask. Let us know in the poll!

Dairy researchers identify bacterial spoilers in milk

ScienceDaily (July 20, 2012) ? Our days of crying over spoiled milk could be over, thanks to Cornell food scientists.

Milk undergoes heat treatment -- pasteurization -- to kill off microbes that can cause food spoilage and disease, but certain bacterial strains can survive this heat shock as spores and cause milk to curdle in storage.

Researchers in the Milk Quality Improvement Program at Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have identified the predominant spore-forming bacteria in milk and their unique enzyme activity, knowledge that can now be used to protect the quality and shelf life of dairy products.

"Control of food spoilage is critical in a world that needs to feed 7 billion people," said Martin Wiedmann, food science professor and study co-author. "Approximately 25 percent of post-harvest food is spoiled by microbes before it is consumed."

The study, published in the March issue of Applied Environmental Microbiology by the lab of Wiedmann and Kathryn Boor, the Ronald P. Lynch Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, identified the predominant strains of spore-forming bacteria, which can foul milk and other food products. The culprits, Paenibacillus bacteria, are ubiquitous in nature and cause off-flavors in a variety of foods and curdling in dairy products.

As spores, the bacteria can survive in dormant form for years despite the best practices in cleaning, processing and packaging.

In fact, the bacteria may be uniquely adapted to overcome the twin tactics of dairy protection: pasteurization followed by refrigeration. According to co-author and research support specialist Nicole Martin, the spores are not only resistant to heat, the small jolt of heat during pasteurization may actually stimulate them to germinate. Some can reproduce in refrigerated dairy products at temperatures that would stymy other types of bacteria.

"We studied 1,288 bacterial isolates in raw milk, pasteurized milk and the dairy farm environment; however, only a handful of strains accounted for 80 percent of the spore-formers present," said Wiedmann. "They grow well in milk -- and possibly other foods -- at temperatures as low as 43 F, and we can identify Paenibacillus because of their uniquely high galactosidase enzyme activity at 32 C."

They also investigated how pasteurization affects the presence of such bacteria.

Concerns about food safety have prompted many dairy processors to increase pasteurization temperatures above the 161 F minimum set by the government. Anecdotal reports, however, suggested this practice actually led to more spoilage once the products were refrigerated.

Tallying bacterial numbers throughout the refrigerated shelf life of milk pasteurized at two different temperatures -- 169 F and 175 F -- the Wiedmann-Boor lab found that lowering the temperature significantly reduced bacterial growth during refrigerated storage, especially by 21 days after pasteurization.

The findings are already being applied in the field. The Wiedmann-Boor Lab was enlisted by Upstate Niagara, a cooperative of more than 360 dairy farm families throughout western New York, to further improve the quality of their award-winning milk by assessing milk samples for spore-formers.

Data on samples that contained spore-forming bacteria are now being analyzed using DNA fingerprinting to identify the types of organisms present and where they might have come from.

Martin said she hopes the collaborative project will become a model for how to approach spore-forming bacteria in individual dairy processing plants.

"It's one of the strengths we have at Cornell -- we are able to do advanced research and immediately turn it around to help the industry," Martin said.

TickTechPros, a company that develops affordable web and mobile solutions for the ticketing industry, recently announced that they have launched a new line of products and services aimed at helping small business ticket brokers increase ticket sales.

The company's services include easy-to-manage plug-in websites that offer content management, rotating images, and search engine optimization. This is a cost effective solution for a user that is on a budget. TickTechPros also offers XML sites that offer added functionality and customization. Arun Kumar, co-founder of TickTechPros told TicketNews in a recent email that for someone who is planning for a larger pay-per-click campaign, or wants to integrate their social media thread, blog or a live chat module, the XML solution is the way to go.

TickTechPros, which also offers smart phone applications for iPhone and Android, charges a one-time setup fee along with a monthly fee, which varies depending on the service. According to their website, the one-time setup fee for a plug-in site is $550 compared to $1,300 for an XML site. Monthly fees are $79 for a plug-in site, $129 for an XML site, and $149 for an iPhone or Android app. The cost of online marketing solutions depends on the type of solutions the client is looking for.

While TickTechPros offers their clients everything they need to increase ticket sales, manage customer service, and market their product, the goal of the company has always been to also provide the client with the necessary knowledge to be able to effectively use these tools.
"[A] web site is just a tool, if you don't bring in visitors there is no use of a
web site," said Kumar to TicketNews. "We want our clients and prospects to be successful. So we are willing to train them on trends [and] methods that are used in the online marketing industry."

In doing so, Kumar and co-founder Roger Decker created a book called "21 Ways to Increase Online Ticket Sales," which is available for users to download at no cost. The book gives small business ticket brokers advice on how to generate ticket sales, tips of social media marketing, how to use certain technology methods, and it also discusses the power of blogging and direct mail campaigns.

TickTechPros recently launched their ticketing solutions at the 2012 Ticket Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada. Co-founders Kumar and Decker began their partnership in 2010 with DirectSeats.com, a privately held online ticket broker also based in Texas. The pair has spent the last two years creating accessible solutions for small companies who cannot otherwise afford to have a team that is dedicated to handling their entire ticketing process.

According to Kumar, there are several aspects of TickTechPros that make the company unique including their one-door solution for web and mobile needs, strong content management system, and competitive prices. Unlike most ticketing companies, TickTechPros offers free knowledge to clients on how to increase their online sales. The online ticketing web development experts also have the manpower to assure that all the clients' needs are met ? TickTechPros is owned by CAP Digisoft Solution, a company which has 150 off-shore employees and is backed a strong management team and process, Kumar told TicketNews.

TickTechPros has plans to expand their services to include things like daily web site management, social media activities, and more, according to Kumar.

Limestone Ministries, an outreach of Mill Creek Baptist Church, and Botetourt Parks and Recreation are hosting a sports camp this week. Stations are set up through out the grounds of Limestone Park to provide children a way to gain some sports action and practice skills.

J.R. Graybill, youth pastor for Mill Creek Baptist Church, is the director of the camp. ?This is our 8th year? with the camp.?

Though, the weather is hot? the hottest topic is that an average of 250 youth counselors and kids are participating.? the Camp counselors are mostly athletes from James River plus some talented adults who are helping as volunteers.

A misting station has been set up for relief of the heat and humidity.

Liz Provost, a volunteer for Buchanan Rescue Squad is also parked by the misting area just in case her services are needed for an injury or scrape. She said, ?We are averaging 30 campers with anything from a scrape, to heat to bee stings? under her tent.

Plenty of water is available at the drinking station and camp counselors were encouraging frequent breaks.

The sports the children aged from K-5 grade included: football, cheerleading, tennis, basketball, swimming, soccer, archery, volleyball, gymnastics and basketball. Even Rev. Randy Daniels, pastor at Mill Creek is in on the act and teaches the tennis class.

Swimming by far looked the most appealing, but archery seemed to be the most popular as the boys and girls like aiming at cool targets even on a hot day! The Botetourt View tried and made a second ring circle! Archery is lead by Jimmy Brugh and his teen volunteers.

Graybill praised the efforts of local churches and businesses who have provided food and snack as well as volunteers. ?This has been a community effort,? he said.

The camp will continue through Friday when former UVA standout football player, John Copper will be the featured speaker.

Big red is reporting some green, green earnings. Verizon today posted its second quarter financials, and it seems pretty happy about the whole thing, thanks to $28.6 billion in total operating revenues -- a 3.7 percent increase over this time last year. The carrier's consolidated operating income, meanwhile, hit $5.7 billion for the quarter, up from $4.9 billion in Q2 2011. In Wireless, the company racked up $15.8 billion in service revenues (up 7.3 percent from last year) and $6.9 billion in data revenues (up 18.5 percent). The second quarter saw the addition of 1.2 million retail net customers, for a total of 94.2 million by the end of the financial period. Also, according to the numbers, smartphones now make up half of the carrier's postpaid customer phone base -- that's up three percent from last quarter.

Three Texas Tech Agriculture Professors Receive Awards

Three Texas Tech professors have received awards for their work in meat science.

The trio was presented with the awards from the American Society of Animal Science at the group?s annual meeting in Phoenix.

Mark Miller, Horn Professor of animal science, received the Meat Science Research Award; Michael Galyean, dean of the college, received the Morrison Award; and Bob Albin, retired professor in animal science, was named an American Society of Animal Science Fellow.

The American Society of Animal Science Meat Science Research Award is given to animal scientists who have ?contributed excellent basic or applied research in meat science,? according to a press release.

The Morrison Award is given in recognition of research excellence of direct importance to livestock production. Galyean is also a Horn Professor.
