During his November 14 press conference, President Obama said his broad vision of comprehensive immigration reform ?is very similar to the outlines of previous efforts at comprehensive immigration reform.? This is newsworthy because previous comprehensive immigration reform efforts since 1986 have produced seven amnesties, none of which reduced illegal immigration. This begs the question: Is the permanent reduction of illegal immigration a goal of this administration?

The last bipartisan U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform studied the issue for six years. President Clinton appointed former congresswoman and Democratic icon Barbara Jordan as its chair. Jordan rose from humble means to become a lawyer and the first Southern black woman elected to the House of Representatives. She was a leader in the civil rights movement, a professor of ethics, a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a world-class orator (two of her speeches are considered among the greatest of the 20th century). Her appointment gave the commission instant credibility. Jordan said that she believed her responsibility as the head of the commission was to restore credibility to the U.S. immigration system. On the issue of illegal immigration, Jordan was unambiguous about her goals: ?Unlawful immigration is unacceptable. Those who should not be here will be required to leave.?

President Obama signaled a different philosophy on November 14, saying, ?I do think that there should be a pathway for legal status for those who are living in this country, are not engaged in criminal activity, are here simply to work.?

This is a clear departure from the approach advocated by Jordan, who couldn?t have been clearer on this point. ?There are people who argue that some illegal aliens contribute to our community because they may work, pay taxes, send their children to our schools, and in all respects except one, obey the law,? she said. ?Let me be clear: that is not enough.?

Jordan?s stated concerns were about ?the impact of immigration on the most disadvantaged within our already resident society ? inner city youth, racial and ethnic minorities, and recent immigrants who have not yet adjusted to life in the U.S.? At the time, 3-4 million foreign citizens were working illegally in the U.S. Today, 7 million illegal workers hold U.S. jobs while more than 20 million U.S. citizens and legal immigrant workers can?t find full-time work. If that isn?t the immigration problem that Obama proposes to fix, what is?

Additionally, if Obama believes an exception should be made for illegal aliens who ?are simply here to work,? does that apply only to those who are here illegally today, or will his exception extend to future waves of illegal workers? If he wants to make this exception for any future alien who violates the terms of her visa or crosses the border illegally, why have limits on immigration at all beyond terrorists, rapists, and murderers? If President Obama wants to limit the exception to an eighth (and final?) amnesty, why is he advocating a ?continuation? of policies that got us into this mess in the first place? Obama has rejected Jordan?s framework without articulating an alternative.

Milestone along the way to CO2-free power plants

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A new method for capturing carbon dioxide (CO₂) emitted by power plants could reduce their CO₂ emissions by more than 90%, while utilizing less energy and incurring less expense than former approaches. The TU Darmstadt, which operates one of the world's largest pilot systems for capturing CO₂, has been investigating the "carbonate-looping" method for the past four years, with success. Yet another major benefit of the method is that it may be retrofitted to existing power plants.

Large quantities of the greenhouse gas CO₂ are generated during the combustion of fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gas. A key technology for arriving at lower-emission, more environmentally friendly, power plants is thus carbon capture and utilization (CCU) applied to fossil fired power-plants. CCU could allow reducing CO₂?emissions arising from employing fossil fuels for generating electricity and various other purposes by industry to a minimum and thereby significantly contribute to reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. However, previous approaches to CO₂?capture required high energy inputs and operating costs, which reduced their efficiency and hindered their acceptance.

Limestone binds the CO₂ contained in power-plant flue gases

The TU Darmstadt's Institute for Energy Systems and Technology has been conducting pilot-scale investigations of various innovative methods for CO₂?capture. Means are being developed for virtually totally avoiding CO₂?emissions, while keeping energy inputs and operating costs extremely low. In conjunction with that work, the "carbonate-looping" method has emerged as a particularly promising approach that the Darmstadt researchers have meanwhile studied for more than 1,000 operational hours. The carbonate-looping method involves initially employing naturally occurring limestone for binding CO₂ contained in power-plant flue gases in a first-stage reactor. The now pure CO₂ is then reliberated in a second-stage reactor and may subsequently be further processed or stored.

The TU Darmstadt's pilot-scale research system proved capable of capturing more than 90% of the CO₂ emitted, while reducing both the energy input and operating costs formerly required for CO₂?capture by more than 50%. Yet another benefit of the "carbonate-looping" method is that it may be retrofitted to existing power plants. Institute Director Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Epple, who, along with his staff of more than thirty coworkers, have been investigating the method, remarked that, "This method represents a milestone along the way to CO₂?free power plants and will allow coal-fired, natural-gas-fired, waste-derived-fuel-fired, and biomass-fired, power plants to reliably, cost-effectively, generate electricity and heat, without burdening the environment."

Suitability for utilization on full-scale systems

Since various investigations and simulations conducted in parallel have indicated that the method would be suitable for utilization on full-scale systems, the experience gained by the TU Darmstadt group is currently being applied to a system that has been scaled up by a factor of twenty. The aim of that project, which is being supported by the German Federal Economics Ministry and various industrial associates, is planning such a scaled-up system for installation on an existing, German, power plant. However, which power plant will be involved remains to be decided.

The investigations of the "carbonate-looping" method have been supported to date by grants totaling more than five million Euros from the German Federal Economics Ministry and various industrial associates. Another project that is supported by grants totaling 1.5 million Euros from the European Union and industry is aimed at further improving the method's energetic efficiency.

Thanksgiving Week Shows Healthy Giving Signs - Prospecting - The ...

Americans didn?t increase their spending only at the malls over Thanksgiving, they gave a lot more to charity in the past week than they did at this time a year ago, producing a 61-percent surge in online donations.

The data come from a Chronicle analysis of gifts processed by Network for Good, which handles online donations for charities.?The Chronicle looked at gifts that the group processed for over 8,700 nonprofits in both 2011 and 2012 and found that not only did the amount of donations increase, but so did the number of donations, which rose 16 percent compared with Thanksgiving week last year.

?Corporate partners urging employees to give, coupled with [Superstorm] Sandy relief, have significantly boosted giving,? says Katya Andresen, chief operating officer at Network for Good.

The year-end surge was not just a one-week phenomenon. Since October, those?charities have more than doubled the amount of money they?ve raised online, compared with the first seven weeks of the last quarter in 2011. The number of gifts has risen by 26 percent.

Network for Good says the fourth-quarter rise isn?t just about Sandy but also about the popularity of online-fundraising portals like Crowdrise that help funnel contributions to different causes.

?That really bolsters the positive effects for the average nonprofit, because they?re getting donations from multiple sources,? Ms. Andresen says.

She adds: ?We?re seeing healthy growth already.?

The Chronicle will be providing a weekly tally on charities? online fundraising, based on Network for Good data, to serve as a benchmark for charities raising money online this season.

Nexus 4 back in stock on T-Mobile USA site

After swiftly selling out on the carrier's website just a few days ago, it seems T-Mobile USA is back with more stock of the desirable LG Nexus 4. As before, the phone is being sold for $199 on a two-year service plan with Tmo.

The LG-made Nexus phone has been quick to sell out via many online retailers, including Google's own Play Devices store. Previously, Google had directed would-be Play Store buyers to T-Mobile, however shortly after that notice went up Tmo's stock was also depleted.

T-Mobile is offering the 16GB version of the Nexus 4, which sold for $350 during the brief time it was available through Google Play.

In more good news for Nexus 4 customers, it seems the Google Play Store is also expecting more stock this week.

Towards the end of the week, EURUSD approached the 1.30000 psychological level.

In?Europe, despite of?a sovereign credit downgrade of France, due to?a sustained loss of competitiveness and the failure to tackle structural problems, according to Moody?s, market still remained optimistic for the Euro.? As a matter of fact, French Finance Minister Moscovici claimed that the downgrade?would force leaders to agree to pursue reforms, and that would not necessarily be a bad thing.? Although?the downgrade have already?impacted the rating of the ESM/EFSF bailout facilities, and the EFSF was forced to delay the auction of three-year notes on Tuesday.

In Greece, the negotiations continued on?with final details expected to be negotiated this weekend ahead of another Eurogroup meeting this coming Monday.? This timetable would still allow Greece to receive the anticipated aid tranches in early December.? Chimps in Uganda: Travels In and Out of the Forest

Humans are very poorly adapted to a chimpanzee lifestyle. I am reminded of this on a nearly daily basis as we trace the locations where chimpanzees have been hanging out. I regularly trip over vines and tree roots, slip off logs, and slide down muddy hillsides. I have tumbled to the ground no less than eight times in the past week. In between bouts of tripping, stumbling, and cursing, I find myself marveling at the strength and agility required to live in this forest habitat.

Chimpanzees are remarkably agile and well adapted to live in a variety of habitats in equatorial Africa. They are gifted climbers, and they also travel swiftly and gracefully on the ground as quadrupeds. In addition, they have staggering strength. A classic series of studies by John Bauman in the 1920?s demonstrated that chimpanzees have more than four times the strength of a human. While it is a difficult feat to measure this accurately, there is no doubt that chimpanzees are very strong indeed. Anthropologist Alan Walker described their strength as follows:

?On one occasion, I was minding my own business while walking along a forest trail when I nearly bumped into an adult male chimpanzee that was doing the same. The frightened animal swung at a nearby tree buttress root, making a resonating booming sound. After this display, the animal raced up the trunk and proceeded to shake branches high above me. When my heart rate returned to normal, I tried to imitate the chimpanzee by banging on the buttress as hard as I could. I could produce only a laughably feeble sound. Thus it was that I came to appreciate firsthand what many people know anecdotally?that great apes are immensely strong.?

(Note: If you happen to encounter an adult male chimpanzee in the forest, I would not advocate Walker?s response as your first recourse! Still, you get the idea.)

As I?ve struggled to maintain my clumsy upright posture, I?ve snapped a few photos of chimpanzees being their graceful selves in the trees.

Outside the forest, traveling hasn?t been much easier lately. In the past couple of weeks, we?ve had multiple vehicle problems. First, our beloved vehicle, Lucy, broke down just after a visit with friends in the next district over. It was the sort of malfunction that involved broken bits of metal falling onto the road and oil leaking out, leaving a disastrous Hansel-and-Gretel trail of vehicle mayhem behind. We had to call a tow truck to pull Lucy from a small dirt road to the nearest town. It?s not uncommon for trucks here to have short, snappy sayings painted onto the front of them. Our tow truck bore the slogan ?Dangerous Toweling?. Somehow, this didn?t inspire my confidence. Nonetheless, we made it back to town without incident.

It looked like we might be without a research vehicle for a week or two. Luckily, we were able to have our mechanic in Kampala send spare parts via bus the very next day. Jack put his mechanical skills to work and replaced the broken parts in no time. Thankfully, what looked like a serious setback was remedied in less than 24 hours.

Next, just days later, we got two flat tires. Unfortunately, both tires went flat on same day. The back right tire went flat, so we tested the spare in preparation to make a swap. The spare was also flat. Our portable compressor saved the day until we arrived back in town to get both tires repaired. These two tires are among the eight or so flats we?ve had in the past couple months. The good news is that I?ve never been so good at repairing flats. I have to admit that it might be time to invest in some new tires, though. Until then, we?ll keep chugging along, over forest tree roots and dirt road potholes alike.

Hello everyone. After experiencing many roleplays on this site, I've noticed that one of the most frustrating things is that roleplayers can often get stuck and "not know what to do".
Thats why I've incorporated a "Quest System" in this roleplay. Each character will be assigned tasks and encounter various obstacles throughout the story. At this point Derrick can take full charge of this quest, has full autonomy and can write how things turned out. Also note that you don't have to wait for me to tell you what to do. You can assign yourselves quests, make up your own side characters, etc. Be creative and find something to do. Just a couple points to keep in mind:

1) Although we don't have an exact set "Ending", we can agree on a main plot and write our posts accordingly. So the main plot is this:
a) Slender Man exists. He's just elusive.
b) The big mystery is whether or not the people he kidnaps are still alive or not. If they are, where does he keep them?
c) Perhaps Slender has some sort of weakness???
d) What are the reasons why Slender is so interested in this town?

2) Your character should encounter difficulties and trials. These are important because it shows your character's personality.

3) Make up your own side characters and places that are related to the main plot. Some examples might be people who know a thing or two about Slender, certain objects or places that might be related to Slender, or people who can give you clues on where to go and who to talk to.

Young and reckless, Mason Redding would be considered nothing but that. As the son of a billionaire tycoon, he had been privileged and spoiled, not quite understanding the kind of lifestyle he was leading. Parties, women, drugs, Mason was the sort of man many despised and yet worshipped. His friends followed him with a zealous determination, none were genuine, especially not his best friend, (James Franco), who had as much hate towards Mason as most of his enemies possessed, but kept it under wraps. Needless to say, once Mason was pronounced dead, not many grieved, save for his family, even they had expected his eventual demise. Now, how exactly did Mason die?

Mason?s father had never imagined he?d be asking his son to get his shit together so early in his life. When Mason was twenty-one, his father, David Redding, was diagnosed with a third stage cancer, his terminal illness, however, was kept a secret from his family. Mason was given a choice, either stop his careless lifestyle and begin taking more of a leadership part in his father?s company or join the military, specifically the marines- which, his father hoped, would kick him into gear. Failing to please his father, Mason was forced to choose the latter. It was tough in the beginning, the boot camp, his family?s lack of attention. Eventually, Mason was sent overseas, and during his first mission, he?d simply disappeared during an ambush on the outskirts of an Iraqi village.

Within months of his disappearance, Mason was pronounced dead after they had found unidentified remains. And following the weeks of the pronunciation, David Redding, too, passed away, leaving a mother and a daughter grieving for both father and son. Emma, Mason?s sister, had only been twelve years old then.

However, five years later, Mason returns. His story unknown, his demeanor completely changed, his body ridden in deep scars, and his mind trying to get away from the torment of the mental trauma he has gone under. His only wish of his family, to keep his ?return? a secret. ?I need to stay dead. Nonexistent.? They oblige, for all they care is that to them, Mason is still alive? but is he well? Something has happened to him within the deserts of the Middle East, drastically changing his personality. He?s hiding something, something definitely dangerous. As of late, he?s behind the vigilante mask the police department has begun dubbing ?The Frankfort City Warden?. Others view him as a criminal, a murderer, while some view him as the modern-day Robin Hood, a savior.

UN court to start Argentina ship case against Ghana on Nov 29

HAMBURG (Reuters) - The United Nations' maritime court in Hamburg said on Wednesday it will hold hearings on November 29-30 into Argentina's demands that Ghana free an Argentine naval ship stranded in the African country due to a court order brought by bondholders.

The ARA Libertad tall sailing ship, a naval training vessel, was detained in Ghana's eastern port of Tema on October 2 at the request of hedge fund NML Capital Ltd, which says Argentina owes it $300 million on bonds in default.

The United Nations' International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea said urgent hearings would be held in Hamburg on November 29-30 into Argentina's formal complaint filed on November 14.

A rapid decision was expected but it is not known when the court will make its judgement, a tribunal spokeswoman said.

Argentina says international law prohibits warships from being seized in foreign ports and has asked the court to intervene.

Creditors including NML have won several billion dollars in damages in U.S. courts over Argentina's default, but they have largely been unable to collect because most Argentine assets are protected by sovereign immunity laws.

The Argentine government refers to funds like NML as "vulture funds" because they buy distressed or defaulted debt and then sue in international courts to get paid in full.

While talks and deals on budget cuts and tax increases are currently on hold, once the holiday weekend ends, it's time to take to Twitter and follow these folks to learn what's at stake, where each party stands and whether to expect a bipartisan deal for the new year.
