Plan your food choices in advance, and enjoy the Iowa State Fair ...

It is that time of year once again.? The glorious sights and sounds of the fair are upon us.? The fair can be such a fun family outing, but can turn into a ?diet buster? in a hurry.? Here are a few easy tips to help you make smart, healthy decisions at the fair!

  • Drink plenty of water! State Fair always seems to be HOT.? It is important to drink 64oz. of water daily even when at the fair all day.
  • Eat healthy low-calorie, high-fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables before going to the fair.? This will help keep you feeling full, light and full of energy for a day at the fair!
  • Avoid high-calorie beverages such as regular pop, lemonade, beer, tea, smoothies.? Although these sound refreshing, they will most likely leave you thirstier than you were before and pack a lot of calories.? Water is 0 calories and quenches the thirst.
  • Choose a sandwich or grilled meat as often as possible. Remember that just because you get a sandwich, there is no rule that the bread must be eaten. Between the Iowa Pork Producers, Beef Producers and Turkey Federation there is bound to be a healthy local option!
  • Remember that your daily calories are like a budget, instead of trying everything choose one splurge and work that into your daily calorie ?budget?.
  • Here are just a few of the splurges available this year:

Butter-On-A-Stick? | 400 calories

Funnel Cake? | 760 calories

Fried Twinkie? | 400 calories

Caramel Apple (without nuts)? | 300 calories
