Sony's Hirai to extend PlayStation strategy (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Incoming CEO Kazuo Hirai aims to re-shape Sony Corp by linking hardware and software through online networks -- a model he used at its PlayStation unit -- dismissing any suggestion the battered brand would revert to a gadget-centered strategy under his management.

In the meantime, he said, he would focus on paring costs at its TV unit and look to squeeze expenses elsewhere to return Sony to profit.

The Sony Computer Entertainment model "is a bigger concept we can grow into a bigger space," Hirai, 51, said in a group interview at the company's Tokyo headquarters. "Hardware drives software and software drives hardware," he added, referring to online sales of games and other content PlayStation owners.

Hirai oversaw the phenomenal rise of the PlayStation gaming system in the United States and since last March headed Sony's consumer products and services business.

He didn't say what changes the wider application of that strategy would have on Sony, which unlike its consumer electronics rivals such as Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc, owns significant content in movies, music and games software.

A more immediate task for Hirai, however, is to stem losses with cost savings that will add to cuts made by outgoing boss, Howard Stringer.

Hirai formally succeeds Stringer as CEO on April 1, with the once-stellar consumer electronics brand heading for what it warned last week would be a much bigger-than-expected $2.9 billion annual loss, its fourth in a row.

The surge of red ink has put Hirai under intense pressure from investors and ratings agencies to quickly staunch losses at the sprawling electronics group. Hirai pledged not to flinch from tough decisions to trim costs and renewed a promise to return the TV business to profit in two years.

"We have to make some hard decisions on where there are some redundancies and reduce the fixed costs in a variety of different areas," he said, pointing to sales units in Japan, Europe and the United States, supply chains and Tokyo headquarters functions as areas where cuts could be made.

Credit rating agency Standard and Poor's on Wednesday cut its long-term debt rating on Sony and warned it may drop it another notch within a year if Hirai fails to stem TV losses and deliver a significant boost to profitability. [ID:nL4E8D861P] Sony was also downgraded by Moody's last month.

BIG BLEED

The TV division has lost more than $11 billion over eight fiscal years. Together, Sony, Panasonic and Sharp expect to lose $17 billion this year alone, highlighting the savaging of Japan's electronics industry by foreign rivals led by Samsung, weak demand and a strong yen.

A goal for Sony to end that bleeding in two years was "tracking where we said it would be at the end of the year, or a little ahead of that," Hirai said.

Better products would, he said, add as much as 40 billion yen ($520 million) in profit, with cost improvements adding another 50 billion yen, as part of a strategy he described as "defense and offense."

As well as weak global TV demand, Sony has been hammered by last year's flooding in Thailand that ruptured supply chains, a big one-off charge for exiting a flat-panel joint venture with Samsung, and smart competition from Apple and Samsung that has squeezed market share in TVs, smartphones and other gadgets.

Hirai predicted that LCD technology would remain the main battlefield in TVs for at least three years, before next generation technology takes hold.

STRATEGY ROLE

Hirai has yet to reveal his management line-up, naming only Tadashi Saito, a former Sony chief financial officer at Sony Electronics in the United States, as the company's first chief strategy officer since 2005.

Saito will work with senior managers "to formulate strategies for group companies overall, as well as giving us a lot of input and advice on M&A activity," Hirai said.

Hiroshi Yoshioka, previously identified by Stringer as one of "Four Musketeers" who could succeed him, along with Hirai, will take Sony into the medical imaging business and head up the group's innovation center, "seeking out new business opportunities," Hirai said.

As of Thursday's close, Sony shares had gained 13 percent to a 14-week high of 1,544 yen since Hirai was named as the next CEO, outperforming a 2.1 percent gain on the benchmark Nikkei average.

The stock, which slumped more than 60 percent during Stringer's seven-year reign, was down 0.4 percent in early trading Friday.

A Sony veteran of 28 years, Hirai was credited with reviving the PlayStation gaming operations through aggressive cost-cutting, in competition with Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox.

A year ago, Hirai, a fluent English speaker, was promoted to head the consumer products and services business, overseeing Sony's network operations. He was also at the forefront of efforts to counter hackers who accessed Sony customers' personal details.

He takes over after a period of cost-cutting by Stringer, a rare foreign CEO in Japan who sold off TV factories in Spain, Slovakia and Mexico and outsourced more than half of the group's production to outside companies, including Hon Hai Precision Industry, a Taiwanese contract electronics maker whose key customer is Apple.

The Quad-Cities Daily

Montgomery-The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) is joining the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) and the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) to announce the start of a yearlong celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program (WSFR), one of the most significant and successful partnership approaches to fish and wildlife conservation in U.S. history.

The ?WSFR 75 ? It?s Your Nature? celebration brings together federal and state fish and wildlife agencies; the hunting, shooting, angling, and boating industries; and conservation groups to mark a milestone of partnership success that has led to 75 years of quality hunting, fishing, shooting, boating and wildlife-related recreation. The occasion also marks the beginning of a new era in wildlife conservation, during which the partners will establish new goals for fostering and maintaining partnerships to continue conservation and outdoor recreation into the next 75 years and beyond.

?The Service is proud to join our partners in recognizing more than seven decades of wildlife conservation and quality outdoor recreational opportunities,? said Director Dan Ashe of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. ?With our nation?s support and our partnership?s renewed commitment, WSFR will help more Americans enjoy wildlife and our great outdoors for many years to come.?

Through the WSFR program, several innovative and foundational fish and wildlife conservation programs are administered. The first was created on September 2, 1937, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, which raises funds through a dedicated federal excise tax on sporting arms, ammunition, bows and arrows.

In 1950, the Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act was enacted and added to the WSFR program. Through this law, funds are provided for fish conservation and boating and fishing recreational programs in each state through a federal excise tax placed on certain fishing and boating equipment and fuels.

Fred Harders, acting director of the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries, says the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program is an excellent example of ?user pay-user plays.? ?This program has provided millions of dollars for Alabama?s natural resources over the years,? he said. These funds, administered by the Service, are combined with hunting and fishing license dollars in each state to fund important state wildlife conservation, hunting and fishing programs. ?This is how our Department is funded,? Harders said. ?We don?t receive any money from Alabama?s General Fund.?

?The 75th anniversary of the WSFR program is a tremendous opportunity to celebrate the conservation victories that have been made possible because of this innovative funding approach,? said Jonathan Gassett, PhD, president, Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. ?WSFR has made the difference for the survival and abundance of some species, and because of it, many fish and wildlife populations are at historically high levels today.? ?Industry and agency partnerships have helped to the successes of the WSFR program to become what it is today.

According to surveys conducted by the Service, the economic impact of hunting, freshwater fishing and wildlife watching to Alabama is $3.2 billion per year.

The WSFR 75th anniversary will include participation in various fish and wildlife conservation events and conferences throughout the year, to culminate with National Hunting and Fishing Day in September 2012.

For more information about the WSFR program and its 75th Anniversary in 2012, visit www.wsfr75.com.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama?s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. Teens have hearts, not just bodies | Melinda Tankard Reist

By Dr Emma Rush

Clueless, to say the least. Michelle Griffin?s claim (?Why teens should read raunchy novels and straight-up smut?) that ?teens should read more porn?, not to mention her implied claim that more Year 10 students should be having sex, are the flashpoints of a piece which lacks anything vaguely resembling a clearly structured argument. The lumping together of a ?reality bites? book specifically pitched at adolescents, such as Judy Blume?s Forever, with the porn-fest of Nicholson Baker?s ?surreally explicit new title?, House of Holes, should alert us to that.

The apparent spur for Griffin?s piece is a recent La Trobe University study finding that despite much talk about the importance of sex education in schools that locates discussion of the biological facts about sex within a broader understanding of healthy relationships, not all Year 9 and 10 students have access to this.

Only one in four hear that ?experimenting with sexualities and pleasure is OK?, something particularly important given the potential impacts of homophobia. (At the same time, the research does suggest that at least some teachers are rising to the challenge, and we should all congratulate them for that.)

The socio-emotionally disconnected version of sex provided by parts of the education system gives rise to the question: how do teens link this school-based information with their actual lives? The ubiquity of porn may well fill the gap. And researchers like Alan McKee, whom Griffin cites approvingly, seem to believe that the pornography industry is well prepared to fill that gap, a pornography industry that promotes cruelty, brutality and inequality.

Griffin is to her credit concerned about the resulting ?shackles of banal commercialised sexuality?. She advocates reading more books over watching YouPorn. That?s great, but she avoids a much more challenging question: precisely which books?

Teens, like the rest of us, are whole people, with rich socio-emotional lives. Some books do justice to the location of sex within a broader socio-emotional context, some do not. But Griffin, apparently relying on a ?consent makes any kind of sex ok? philosophy, makes no such distinction (there?s no problem with ?brutal? porn, apparently), and in doing so, she sells us all short.

The value of consent rests on the possibility of free and rational choice. The idea that either perfect freedom or perfect rationality applies in messy sexual contexts is a fantasy. All the more so for the adolescent context, where the psychological literature clearly shows that teens are more impulsive and more prone to extreme highs and lows than more mature adults.

Add to that peer pressure and alcohol and you?ve got a heady mix. That?s not to say that some psychologically mature teens don?t have healthy sexual relationships ? the literature clearly shows that they do ? but consent is hardly all that is required for this. Consent is necessary but not sufficient for a healthy sexual relationship. And actions need to be more than just acquiescence, more than just ?going along with?, to count as consent.

Let?s face it, even if sex is entered into in a spirit of ?all you need is consent and no strings attached?, that doesn?t make us flourish. Physical intimacy can all too easily lead to emotional connection and then significant distress when this is not mutual. Who has not seen this happen, even with mature adults? Who does not know how the headspin of even potential sexual attraction can throw everything else out of perspective, even in a mature adult? Who seriously thinks it?s a good idea to encourage in teens the idea that, provided you?ve got ?consent?, anything goes?

The very idea that you can just ?consent? to physical intimacy with someone you don?t have a caring relationship with, in the goal of mutual pleasure seeking, is bizarre. The kind of psychological separation from your body (not to mention the other human being in the equation) you would have to achieve to do that sounds more like the kind of pathology that results from sexual abuse, than any kind of healthy sexual development.

The psychological task of adolescence is to develop a holistic sense of who you are, and to become over time an independent and autonomous adult. Sexuality is an important part of that, but it?s far from the only part.

Reading material that portrays sex as a part of caring, complex, human relationships is one important way of promoting such holistic development. Another way is to construct a loving sexual life with someone who genuinely cares about you ? when you are mature enough to form such a relationship. Encouraging teens to wait until they feel ?ready? for sex, and to wait for someone with whom they feel safe, is not to promote oppression. It is to promote empowerment. House of Holes seems unlikely to teach anyone that sort of respect for self or others.

What Your Family Needs to Know About Solar Powered Homes ...

solar vdp The Basics About Solar Power In Your Sacramento Home

(credit: Thinkstock)

For years California has been the?leader?in finding alternate ways to generate electricity and reduce dependency on fossil fuels. Homeowners who are looking to lower electric bills and reduce their carbon footprint are increasingly harnessing the power of the sun to heat and cool their homes.?Whether your goal is to save money and make your home more energy efficient, or to do more to protect the environment, there are many options for providing solar power to your home.

Basics of residential solar

Solar power is generated by photovoltaic (PV) cells, which capture the sun?s energy and converts it to electricity.?The PV cells, made up of semiconductors, absorb the power by sucking in sunlight.?Because the electricity created by PV cells is direct current (DC) and homes use alternating currents (AC), solar systems include an inverter to convert the DC current into AC currents.?There are three main types of solar systems for providing electricity to homes: grid-tie, off-grid, and grid tie with battery backup.?A grid tie system supplements electricity, but keeps your home connected to the electric company.?Any unused solar-generated electricity is returned to the power grid.?An off-grid system works well for rural homes as it includes a battery for storing electricity. A grid tie with battery backup produces its own energy, but has a backup system that can supplement the electric company in the event of a power outage. In addition to providing your home with alternative energy, solar power can also be used for heating your home and pool water, as well as for outside lighting and garden d?cor.

Solar panels

Most homeowners think of solar panels when they think of using solar power for providing electricity to their homes. Solar panels can be attached directly to the roof or onto frames, or they can be mounted on the ground.?The best candidates for solar panels are homes with an open roof space that faces south, west, or southwest where there is minimal shade.?The cost of solar panels varies depending on roof size and how much energy will be needed to power your home, but on average homeowners may spend $10,000-50,000 to install a grid-tie system. There are federal and state incentives available for converting to solar power, which can save the homeowner as much as 50 percent of the upfront costs. In addition, the return-on-investment is quite high, since the solar systems require little maintenance, lasts on average 25 years, and can increase the value of the home by 7-20 percent.

Solar water heaters are another great option for homeowners looking to convert their homes to solar energy.?They are safe, reliable, efficient, and do not pollute the environment.?There are two types of solar water heating systems: active, which has circulating controls and pumps to transfer the water from a collector to a storage tank, and passive, which has no moving parts and works on the principle of convection.?Solar water heater systems cost between $1,500 and $3,500, but federal tax credits are available. Homeowners can generally see savings of up to 50 percent in hot water heating costs.?Additionally, the annual operating cost of a solar water heater is much lower than a standard water heater. The life expectancy is twice as long and they can increase the home?s value.

Costs vary depending on the type of system and installation needs, with the average solar pool heating system running $3,000-4,000.?Even if you can?t afford solar panels, it is still possible to benefit from the sun?s energy to add beauty to your landscape.?Solar yard lights are available in a variety of styles and are simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.?Other solar yard d?cor options include solar-powered water fountains, address plates, and pool lights.

Court Report: Jeremy Lin takes his turn

The Knicks' next hope to turn the season around? Jeremy Lin, who is now the team's starting point guard after posting a huge line in Saturday's win over the Nets (36 minutes, 25 points, 10-19 FG, 5 boards, 7 assists, 1 turnover, 2 steals). The Knicks still have no idea when Baron Davis might join the team's active roster - Mike D'Antoni confirmed that he had a setback and said the team is not counting on his returning before the February 24-27 All-Star break, but "If he does, great." As for Lin, D'Antoni will certainly give him every chance to make things work after his showing on Saturday - he finished six of eight shots at the rim and had six of his assists finished at the rim [via HoopData], showing the exact combination of aggressiveness and decision-making that the Knicks have been lacking at the position. A quick scouting report includes good college numbers, good D-League numbers, and a surprising amount of defensive plays while seeing his NBA minutes. With Davis' status perpetually questionable and D'Antoni still searching for ways to not play Toney Douglas and Mike Bibby, an add here makes sense in plenty of formats.

? Kevin Durant is making a push to wrestle the No.1 ranking in per-game numbers back from LeBron James, and he's doing it on the defensive end of the court. Durant has a double-double in five straight games, has blocked at least two shots in four straight, and his averages over the past 12 games include 28.1 points on 54-percent shooting, 1.3 threes, 9.6 boards, 1.5 steals, and 2 blocks in 39 minutes. His assist-to-turnover ratio remains problematic, (2.8:3.9 over the past 12), but it's most certainly a non-issue in the context of this spike in defensive numbers. Durant's ranks during those 12 games: 19th in rebounds, 31st in steals, and 12th in blocks.

? Luol Deng wasted no time in his return from the left wrist injury that cost him seven games, playing 41 minutes on Saturday (21 points, 9-19 FG, 3-7 3PT, 9 boards, 1 steal, 1 block). Deng had no issues during or after the game and was also fine as a full participant in the team's Sunday practice, so all parties are "encouraged" according to Tom Thibodeau .. Spencer Hawes also showed no ill effects after returning from 10 games off due to an Achilles strain to play 32 minutes on Saturday (14 points, 7-11 FG, 5 boards, 1 block). The 76ers were very cautious to hold Hawes out until they were absolutely sure that he was 100 percent.

? Kevin Love has been suspended two games for driving his foot into the upper body and face of Luis Scola on Saturday. After the game, Love said it wasn't intentional and apologized to Scola, but taking a look at the replay makes it hard to find much sympathy for Love's case. He will serve the suspension on Tuesday (SAC) and Wednesday (@MEM), and Derrick Williams and Michael Beasley figure to inherit the majority of his minutes.

? The Knicks will be without Amar'e Stoudemire on Monday night, as he has left the team following the passing of his older brother from injuries sustained in a car accident. It's fairly safe to assume that Amar'e will be out for at least the next two games - the Knicks play Monday (UTA), Wednesday (@WAS), Friday (LAL), and Saturday (@MIN), and then have Sunday and Monday off. Jared Jeffries is expected to start at power forward in Stoudemire's place on Monday.

? Status Updates: Elton Brand (thumb) is out again Monday .. The Mavs hope Jason Kidd (calf) can return by Wednesday .. Nuggets on Monday: Nene Hilario (heel), Arron Afflalo (foot), and Tomofey Mozgov (ankle) are out; Kenneth Faried, Julyan Stone, and Kosta Koufos will start .. Brandon Knight (broken nose) will be fitted with a mask and is not expected to miss any games .. Tony Allen (knee) is a game-time decision Monday .. When asked Sunday, Tyrone Corbin said he has no plans to demote Devin Harris from the starting lineup .. Both Brook Lopez and MarShon Brooks may attempt to return to Nets' practices this week .. Jameer Nelson (concussion) has been cleared to return on Monday .. Jared Dudley (thigh) will play Monday .. Raymond Felton (ankle) is doubtful for Monday .. Carl Landry could miss up to a month with a left MCL sprain, and Jason Smith won't play Monday because of a concussion, meaning Gustavo Ayon will make his first NBA start .. Jarrett Jack (knee) is also out again Monday .. D.J. Augustin (toe) remains without a timetable.

? Scanning the Buzz Index leaders: Jason Thompson posted his third consecutive double-double on Saturday (40 minutes, 15 points, 16 boards) and has averaged 10.9 points on 52-percent shooting and 9.1 boards in 30 minutes as a starter. Thompson's lines don't often go much deeper than those three stats, but he's looking like a reasonable bet to maintain those minutes, at the expense of J.J. Hickson .. Reggie Williams flashed his solid offensive game Saturday (39 minutes, 21 points, 8-15 FG, 2-8 3PT, 6 assists) and will have plenty of opportunities to do so over the next few weeks. His larger long-term fantasy prospects remain in question, however, with returns of D.J. Augustin, Corey Maggette, and Gerald Henderson on the horizon .. Can I explain John Salmons' averages of 16.5 points on 52-percent shooting, 3 threes, 4 assists, and 2.5 steals over the past two games? No, but Keith Smart's confidence in him has never wavered - hence his starting every game that he's played - and Smart has tightened his rotation even further in recent games .. Yes, I realize it's tough to hold on to James Johnson at this point. My advice: swap him out for the recently-promoted Trevor Booker where possible to grab those steals-plus-blocks and keep an eye on Andrea Bargnani's timetable for a return from his calf injury .. Feel free to cut Stephen Jackson in anything resembling a standard league. The Bucks aren't going to play him and no team is going to trade for him. The outlandish rumors that the Nets will try to trade for him likely came to be simply because S-Jax and Dwight Howard share the same agent .. We'll have to see what happens to Alonzo Gee's playing time once Daniel Gibson and Anthony Parker return from injury, but he's certainly making a case to stay heavily-featured in the Cavs' rotation. Averages over the past seven games include 11 points on 48-percent shooting, 0.9 threes (38%), 4.7 boards, and 2.1 steals in 28 minutes .. Bismack Biyombo started at center for the Bobcats on Saturday and likely would have even if DeSagana Diop weren't injured. Biyombo's per-30 minute averages thus far include 7.1 points, 7.8 boards, 3.1 blocks, 1.9 turnovers, and 4.7 fouls, so he's only viable in deep leagues at this point.
